The Melodifestivalen 2020 was the Swedish finals for the Euro Vision Song Contest 2020 in Rotterdam ( Netherlands ). It was the 60th edition of the competition organized by the public television company Sveriges Television (SVT). The Mamas won with the song Move . Due to the cancellation of the Eurovision Song Contest by the EBU on March 18, 2020, the winners will not take part in the competition. You are the first winners of the Melodifestivalens who will not take part in the Eurovision Song Contest of the same year. An internal nomination for the Eurovision Song Contest 2021 by The Mamas excluded SVT and indicated that a new artist and contribution will be determined at the Melodifestivalen 2021 .
format
concept
For the eighteenth time the semi-finals took place in different locations in Sweden. There were 28 contributions, which were distributed over four semifinals, so that seven contributions were presented per semifinals. The audience decided in two voting rounds who qualified for the final and who was allowed to compete again in the Andra Chansen (German: Second Chance). In each semi-final, the first two entries with the most audience votes qualified directly for the final. Those contributions that took third and fourth place appeared a second time on the Andra Chansen program . There the candidates competed against each other in duels and whoever received the most votes from the audience qualified for the final. In the final, twelve performers then appeared.
The production team in 2020 included Anette Helenius ( production management ), Christel Tholse Willers ( executive producer ), Karin Gunnarsson (producer) and Christer Björkman (deputy producer).
A new voting system was introduced in 2019, which was reinstated in 2020.
Age groups: | |
|
In the semifinals, 12, 10, 8, 6, 4, 2 and 1 point / s could be distributed depending on the age group. In the Andra Chansen program , each group can then distribute one point to their favorites. The interpreter with the most points per duel qualifies for the final. In the event of a tie, the artist with the most total votes wins. In the final, 12, 10, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2 and 1 points per group were distributed due to the increased number of participants compared to the semi-finals. Each of the eight international juries awarded 12, 10, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2 and 1 point / s. In the semifinals and in the Andra Chansen round, the audience determined the result and in the final the audience and the international jury decided the winner in equal parts.
broadcasts
The city of Östersund originally wanted to broadcast Andra Chansen on March 2, 2019, but the date collided with the 2019 Biathlon World Championships , which took place there from March 7, 2019. However, the community was still interested in holding the event in 2020. The community last held the Melodifestivalen in 2015 . Nevertheless, the city was not selected as a venue in 2020 either.
On August 27, 2019, SVT presented the locations of the Melodifestivalen 2019. As in previous years, two of the four semi-finals will take place in Gothenburg and Malmö. As has been the case since 2013, the final was held in the Friends Arena in Stockholm. Linköping hosted the Melodifestivalen for the sixth time, Luleå for the third and Eskilstuna for the first time.

For the third time in a row after 2018 and 2019, the number of viewers decreased up to and including the show Andra Chansen. For the first time, the number of viewers in all four semifinals and the Andra Chansen remained below the mark of three million viewers. In the past, at least one semi-final reached at least three million viewers. Most recently in 2017 , all four semi-finals reached at least three million viewers. Overall, SVT1 recorded a decrease of around seven percent viewers compared to the previous year. The same also applied to the number of views on SVT Play. On the radio station Sveriges Radio P4 , the programs were heard by an average of half a million people. The number of votes cast also decreased by around 12.5 percent to 43,913,790 votes. However, the number of viewers who took part in the vote increased at the same time.
Choice of contribution
From August 26th, 9:00 am to September 13th, 2019, 11:59 pm, composers had the opportunity to submit a contribution to the Swedish television station SVT. From these 28 contributions will be selected. The selection is made according to the following selection process:
- 14 contributions will be selected from all submitted contributions.
- 13 contributions are selected at the invitation of SVT.
- Amanda Aasa received a starting place for the Melodifestivalen 2020.
As in previous years, at least 50% of all contributions must be written by female composers.
On September 16, 2019, SVT announced that 2545 songs had been submitted for 2020. That's 250 songs more than last year .
A 15-member jury selected the 28 contributions for the program from all the entries.

Stage design
On January 28, 2020, SVT released the stage design. Stage designer Viktor Brattström was based on the stage design of the Eurovision Song Contest 2020 and deliberately designed the design openly, based on the motto Open Up . The stage contains the largest playable area in the history of the melodic festival. The surface consists of a 35 meter long fabric that is played on by eight projectors. An LED wall, as used in the past, is deliberately avoided this time. However, it is up to the performers whether they use this technical option or use their own LED walls for their performance. This year the greenroom is not located in the arena, but in a side room of the arena building outside the arena. In the final, the greenroom will be in the middle of the arena again.
Moderation
On September 3, 2019, SVT presented the three presenters of the show. David Sundin, Linnea Henriksson and Lina Hedlund will moderate the six programs. David Sundin was involved in the scriptwriting in 2015 and 2016 and has also appeared in several shows in roles of various characters. Lina Hedlund took part in the Melodifestivalen in 2002 and 2003 as well as in 2009, 2010 and 2014 with her band Alcazar. After the band broke up in 2018, she returned as a solo artist in 2019 .
Attendees
On November 26, 2019, SVT presented all 28 participants of the Melodifestivalen 2020 in a special press conference. 13 participants will take part in the competition for the first time
Returning performers
23 performers will return to the competition in 2020. In addition to Mariette and Frida Öhrn, who will take part in the competition for the fourth time in 2020, Linda Bengtzing will also return in 2020 and will thus be taking part for the seventh time. In addition to Nanne Grönvall , who won the Melodifestival in 1996 as part of the One More Time group and will take part for the third time in 2020, Robin Bengtsson , winner of the Melodifestival 2017 , will also return in 2020 with his third participation. From March 1 to April 1, 2019, composers had the opportunity to submit a contribution to Swedish Radio SR . Each P4 local station selected a candidate in a local selection process between May 15 and July 27, 2019. Sveriges Radio then put together a jury that selected eight performers from all the winners, who will take part in the finals of the P4 Nästa on August 24, 2019. On May 27, 2019, Titti Schultz and Josefin Johansson were presented as moderators.
Local preliminary decisions
From May 15, 2019, the local radio stations of P4 held their own local preliminary decisions. P4 Västernorrland was the first local radio station to select their contribution, P4 Sörmland selected the last of the 25 contributions on July 27, 2019. In each local preliminary round, five performers competed against each other with their own song. A jury and the audience decided half the winner.

final
The finals took place on March 7, 2020 at 8:00 p.m. ( CET ) in the 27,000-seat Friends Arena in Solna ( Stockholm ). For the first time, as in the Eurovision Song Contest, the audience's points were read out in the reverse order of the jury's results. The moderator Linnea Henriksson read out the points of the entry that got the lowest points in the jury voting first. The other performers follow according to their placement in the jury voting.
Dotter and The Mamas were tied in the jury voting with 65 points each. In the event of a tie in the jury voting, the rules of the Melodifestivalens provide that the entry that received the most twelve points in the jury vote will be placed higher than the other. Since Dotter and The Mamas both received the maximum rating of twelve points twice each, the number of the 10-point rating was assessed. Since Dotter received ten points twice, she won the jury voting. In televoting, The Mamas prevailed with 72 points ahead of Dotter, who received 71 points from the audience. Overall, The Mamas won by one point. This was last the case at Melodifestivalen in 1978. With The Mamas, an interpreter won for the fourth time in a row who took part in the Melodifestivalen for the first time last year. Last year they were directly involved in John Lundvik's stage appearance as backing vocals . For the first time since 2014 a female interpreter won again.
3,243,000 spectators followed the final. It was the show with the highest number of viewers at this year's Melodi Festival, but it was also the final with the lowest number of viewers since 1999. 844,982 viewers took part in the final vote. This is a new all-time record for a show at the Melodifestivalens. Most recently, the record was 804,663 viewers who took part in the vote in the 2019 final . Now the record has now been increased by more than 40,000 viewers.
