Sveriges Television AB ( SVT , German  Swedish television ) is the public television company of Sweden with headquarters in Stockholm and production studios in several other Swedish cities.

Sveriges Television is a public company ; the majority of the shares are owned by a foundation whose board of directors is appointed by the Swedish government. It is financed exclusively through a license fee , the amount of which is determined by the Swedish Parliament ( Riksdagen ). Advertising is not broadcast. The license fee is currently (February 2017) 195 kroner per month (approx. 20.50 euros).

The Swedish television programs were originally produced by Sveriges Radio (SR), Sweden's public radio. In 1979, the television company SVT was spun off as an independent company. In addition to the SVT television, the SR radio and the UR educational radio (Utbildningsradion) also belong to the above-mentioned foundation. UR does not run its own programs; the programs produced by UR are broadcast on the television programs of SVT and the radio programs of SR.

The broadcast takes place via terrestrial transmission systems, satellite, cable, IP TV and television for mobile devices. According to Swedish legislation, there are no additional costs for reception in addition to the statutory broadcasting fees and the electricity bill: the providers of pay-TV packages via satellite (Canal Digital and Viasat) must enable free reception via satellite in Sweden even without a pay-TV subscription; The Swedish cable providers are also obliged to make at least the SVT programs available to the households connected, even if, for example, the monthly cable fee has not been paid. SVT's programs are broadcast unencrypted via digital terrestrial television . The largest Swedish commercial broadcaster TV4 is also included in these regulations .

SVT is a member of the European Broadcasting Union and Nordvision , an association of state broadcasters in the Nordic countries .

Sveriges Television in Stockholm

SVT broadcasts a broad public service program. An important fixed point is, for example, Melodifestivalen , the annual preliminary decision for the Eurovision Song Contest , which is held in several rounds , in which the focus is not only on the selection of the Swedish entry, but also important impulses for the Swedish music industry are given and many new artists are given the opportunity for the first time an appearance on television is offered.

Foreign language programs are not dubbed on Swedish television, but, as is common in Scandinavian countries, broadcast in the original with subtitles . However, children's programs are synchronized.

SVT1 and SVT2 represent the two traditional main programs of Sveriges Television. The first test broadcasts began in 1954, and a regular television program has been broadcast since 1956. The second program went into operation in 1969, with the existing program being named TV1 and the new program being named TV2 .

In the period from 1987 to 1996 the first program was called Kanal 1 and the second program TV2 . In those years, the first program only showed programs that were produced in the Stockholm headquarters, while TV2 broadcasted those programs nationwide that came from the individual regional studios. For example, the children's program in Växjö was put together or sophisticated feature films were always broadcast from Malmö . Kanal 1 was also called Stockholmskanalen (the Stockholm Canal) and TV2 was called Sverigekanalen (the Sweden Canal) - also disparagingly Bondekanalen (the Peasant Canal) by the capital's residents . In the 1980s, the technical prerequisites for the broadcasting of regional news programs on TV2 were created, similar to what happened at the same time in Austria on ORF FS2 .

The two programs have had their current names SVT1 and SVT2 since 1996 , although the strict separation according to production locations (Stockholm / regional studios) has also been abandoned. While in the second half of the 1990s the production of television programs for both programs was still highly decentralized, in recent years most programs have been produced in Stockholm again.

In the late summer of 2008, some changes were made to the program design: SVT1 is to become a classic full program under public law with a lot of information and sophisticated programs. The regional news, which had previously only been broadcast on SVT2 , was partially moved to SVT1 , where it became part of the so-called "news hour " (nyhetstimmen) between 19:00 and 20:00, together with other information programs . The children's programming that was previously scattered on SVT1 and SVT2 is now broadcast exclusively on SVTB . SVT2 is now aimed at a niche audience and brings, for example, alternative cultural programs, religious programs or programs for immigrants.

Additional programs

  • SVT24 (news channel)
  • SVTB (children's program 6:00 a.m. - 8:00 p.m.)
    • Kunskapskanalen (science program 8:00 p.m. - midnight)

The programs SVT24 and SVTB / Kunskapskanalen were only introduced with the introduction of the digital transmission technology DVB-T . At SVTB there is a children's program during the day and a science program in the evening under the name Kunskapskanalen. SVT24 brings news and information programs around the clock.

Special programs

  • SVT World (international program)
  • SVT HD (selected programs from the main programs in high definition )

SVT World (until 2009: SVT Europe ) consisted of selected programs from domestic programs and was broadcast in encrypted form via several satellites around the world, but was also broadcast unencrypted in the Swedish-speaking regions of Finland or fed into the local cable networks. The program was primarily aimed at Swedes who are abroad. For legal reasons, SVT World did not show any purchased programs such as films, reports from sporting events or English-language programs. A smart card for decryption was also sent to Germany for a fee. SVT World was available encrypted in wilhelm.tel cable networks. SVT World was discontinued on April 30, 2017.

When digital terrestrial television was introduced in 1999, some independent regional programs were also introduced, but these were discontinued after a trial phase. There was also another additional digital program, SVT Extra , up to 2008 , which was created especially for the live transmission of large or unexpected events (e.g. large sporting events through to wars and political crises) and was only activated when required. Since 2008 these tasks have been taken over by the news broadcaster SVT24 and SVT Extra has been completely discontinued.

Under the name SVT Play (or Play Prima for high-resolution video material) there is an extensive range on the Internet where practically all in-house productions can be viewed worldwide free of charge.
