Uddevalla, which was then in the Danish-Norwegian kingdom, received its city privileges before 1498. Due to its protected location, but close to the North Sea coast , it was an important station in the border trade between Sweden and Norway . On the other hand, the city was also endangered by the numerous clashes between Sweden and Denmark . It was burned down by Danish or Swedish troops in 1519, 1564, 1611 and 1644.

In 1658 Uddevalla fell to Sweden. In the 18th century the city experienced an upswing as an important trading port for the export of wood and iron and as a fishing port. With the opening of the Trollhätte Canal at the beginning of the 19th century, Uddevalla lost a large part of its trading volume, fell victim to an extensive city fire in 1806 and stagnated.

It was not until the end of the 19th century that the place developed into a modern industrial city with primarily textile and later shipbuilding industries. The crisis in the textile industry after the Second World War and the shipbuilding industry in the 1970s ushered in another recession.

From 1946 to 1986 Uddevalla was the location of the shipbuilding company Uddevallavarvet and from 1989 to 2013 a plant of the car manufacturer Volvo .

Cityscape

In the city fire of 1806, almost the entire city was destroyed. Not much has been preserved from the development afterwards either, most of the city center is from the post-war period. Older buildings can still be found on the outskirts.

Sports

To the east of Uddevalla is the Moto Cross -distance Glimminge , which not least is characterized in that it integral to the certification of Uddevalla according to EMAS is norms.

Uddevalla also has the Rimnersvallen sports stadium with a capacity of 12,000 spectators.

Uddevalla as a Volvo location

The work, which was planned with the advice of the University of Gothenburg and with the participation of the trade union, aimed to give workers more freedom with regard to work organization and to create improved working conditions. The productivity of the plant was higher compared to other Volvo production facilities, but it was closed in 1993. Various reasons play a role for this, including the rising unemployment in Sweden at the time , so that it was no longer necessary to create attractive conditions for the workers, as well as the poor ability to switch to automated production processes. The reason for this was the type of production method in the Uddevalla plant, in which workers did not work in steps of a few, but of more than 20 minutes.

The work is often used as an exceptional example in textbooks dealing with business organization and / or leadership.

Building

The Uddevalla Bridge has spanned the Sunningesund around four kilometers southwest of the center since 2000, and has since relieved the place through which the European route 6 previously ran and shortens the route by 12.8 kilometers.
