Skellefteå [ ɧɛˈlɛftə ] is a town in the Swedish province of Västerbotten County and the historic province of Västerbotten . It is the capital of the municipality of the same name .
The city was founded in 1845 by Vicar Nils Nordlander, making it one of the youngest cities on the coast of northern Sweden . As a religious gathering place, however, the place has long been important. Around the church there were a large number of buildings that were used by the residents of the surrounding area as overnight accommodations at church festivals. However, this church town fell victim to several fires. At the time of the industrial revolution, almost all wooden buildings were replaced by brick houses.
In the nearby Boliden mine of today's Boliden AB , arsenic and gold were mined for a long time , which earned the city the nickname "Goldstadt".
