In 1998 the racing driver won the championship titles of the Swedish, Scandinavian and Nordic Formula Ford. In 1999 the Swede competed in the British Formula Ford for the first time. With three wins he finished his debut season in seventh place overall. In the following season he managed to win three races again and he was fourth in the drivers' championship, while his teammate James Courtney won the championship. In his third season in the British Formula Ford, Dahlgren won two races and won the championship against Patrick Long with 257 to 254 points .

In 2002 Dahlgren moved to the British Formula 3 championship . He took part in the championship on two race weekends and finished 17th overall. In addition, he took part in 15 races in the national classification, in which he finished fifth overall with four wins. In 2003, the Swede contested his second season in the British Formula 3 Championship as a team-mate of Will Power . Both drivers managed to decide one race for themselves. In the end, Power decided the team-internal duel with 103 to 102 points and Dahlgren finished the season in ninth place in the championship standings.

In 2004 Dahlgren left formula racing and switched to touring car racing . He started in a Volvo S60 in the Swedish Touring Car Championship (STCC). With three wins from 18 races, he was runner-up behind Richard Göransson in his first season . After finishing seventh with a win in his second season, he moved to Polestar Racing in 2006 . With one win, he finished fifth in the championship that year. In 2007 Dahlgren was runner-up in the STCC for the second time with two victories - this time behind Fredrik Ekblom . He also competed on the Swedish racing weekend of the World Touring Car Championship (WTCC) in Anderstorp . Since his Volvo S60 was only homologated for the STCC, he entered as a guest starter and was not included in the ranking . Eighth place was his best result.

In 2008 Dahlgren changed his vehicle and started with a Volvo C30 . He finished fifth in the STCC with two wins. The following season he finished seventh in the drivers' championship with four wins. He also took part in one WTCC race weekend as a guest starter in both seasons. In 2010 he was again defeated by Göransson in the title duel in the STCC and was runner-up for the third time with 249 to 251 points. He was more successful in the Scandinavian Touring Car Cup, in which he won the championship title. In the WTCC, the Swede took part in two race weekends this season as a guest starter. A fifth place in Mimasaka was his best placement.

In 2011 , Dahlgren contested a full season in the WTCC for Polestar Racing in a Volvo C30 for the first time. With its operations, Volvo wanted to determine whether a factory engagement would be worthwhile. At the end of the season he finished eleventh overall with fourth place as the best placement.
