The Volvo S60, built exclusively as a notchback sedan, was added to the model range in late summer 2000, thus replacing the S70 . Like the Kombi V70 , the S80 and the XC90 introduced in spring 2000, it was based on the P2 platform.
The types S60 and V70 (until the model change of the V70 in summer 2007) had the same front section and the same interior. In contrast to the S80, which appeared in autumn 1998, the body of the S60 coupé-like and sporty design, which should appeal to a younger group of buyers.
The range of engines consisted exclusively of in-line five-cylinder engines with and without turbochargers as well as diesel. A bi- fuel variant was also offered, which could be operated with both natural gas and petrol . The engine output ranged from 96 kW (130 PS) for the 2.4D to 221 kW (300 PS) for the R variant. Some model variants were also available with all-wheel drive .
Facelift
A facelift was carried out in April 2004 , which only involved changes to the details.
Externally, the model presented itself with the extended front section of the S60 R and the new equipment lines Kinetic, Momentum, Summum with more paint or chrome, depending on the version. In addition, clear glass headlights ensure a more modern look. For the interior there was a new leather version ( Souvereign Hide ) and, in addition, the option of further customizing the vehicle with the Volvo Inscription Program .
In terms of engine technology, the five-cylinder T5 variant received an increase in output of 7 kW (from 184 to 191 kW). The diesel engines were modified in the summer of 2005. They received more torque and were fitted with a soot particle filter. The output values also changed: those of the D5 were increased (from 120 to 136 kW), while those of the 2.4D fell from 96 to 93 kW.
In January 2009 the production of the S60 was stopped. The successor with the same type designation was presented in March 2010 at the Geneva Motor Show. The introduction took place in September 2010.
S60 R
A particularly sporty version with the suffix R was also available from spring 2003. The "R" stands for "refined" (refined, revised). This variant had a slightly redesigned front section with a flatter radiator grille and fog lights that differed from the production model, bi-xenon headlights encased in chrome , five-spoke rims with an R emblem and two straight tailpipes.
With regard to the interior, the S60 R featured royal blue instruments, a dashboard partially covered with real leather, with special leather and color variants and a sports steering wheel.
Equipped with Brembo brakes, the active FourC chassis with three settings and Haldex all-wheel drive , the 2.5-liter in-line five-cylinder used with a turbocharger , two intercoolers and variable valve control generates a maximum of 221 kW (300 hp) and develops a torque of up to 400 Nm.
Production of the Volvo S60 R was discontinued in mid-2007 .

In addition, the design of the front apron has been changed so that the clear visual separation between the middle lower air intake and the outer one is softened.
