The Volvo S70 is a passenger car sedan of the middle class of Volvo . It was launched in late 1996 as a revised version of the Volvo 850 sedan and built until 2000. The station wagon version was called the Volvo V70 .
Overview
The S70 differed from the Volvo 850 in its painted bumper strips and door handles, redesigned aprons, chrome-plated exhaust pipes and white indicator glasses at the rear and a redesigned interior. According to Volvo, there were a total of over 1,800 changes that should bring the model up to the current state of the art. There were initially no significant changes to the engine range. The range of standard equipment was improved compared to the Volvo 850 , four airbags, ABS, electric windows and central locking were always available.
Another revision was made for the 1999 model year. In addition to careful visual changes - the Volvo logo was now highlighted in blue instead of black - the technology was greatly modernized. The side airbags were enlarged, the range of engines brought up to date with the introduction of an electric throttle valve, and the automatic transmissions equipped with adaptive shift logic. In the last year of construction, a 5-speed automatic transmission was introduced for vehicles without a turbo engine, which replaced the previous 4-speed automatic transmission.
On the German market, the station wagon version , the Volvo V70 , was sold much more frequently than the S70 sedan.
In November 2000 production of the Volvo S70 was ended and the Volvo S60 was introduced as the successor.
Models
S70 R
The S70 R was the sedan version of the V70 R. It was only available in the 1998 model year and only had front-wheel drive.
S70 AWD
From spring 1997 to autumn 2000 there was an all-wheel drive version of the S70 which was sold as the S70 AWD . Customers had the choice between a 5-speed manual and a 4-speed automatic transmission; the only engine offered was a 2.4L turbo gasoline engine. Compared to the FWD models, the ground clearance has been increased slightly.
