The PV4 is a Volvo car . It emerged from the Volvo ÖV4 .

description

The PV4 emerged from the ÖV4 after its sales success was limited, and Volvo made the decision to produce more expensive cars for the upper class customers. The design looks a little less elegant than the ÖV4. In contrast to ÖV (= öppen vagn - open car), PV stands for "personvagn" - passenger car.

In contrast to conventional models from this period, the PV4 did not have any steel planking for the body . Instead, the manufacturer relied on the Weymann system , in which the wooden structure of the body is held together by patented connecting pieces. The body skin is made of synthetic leather or, alternatively, real leather. The connecting pieces prevent wood from chafing on wood and are so flexible that they effectively eliminate the creaking and squeaking noises that were common at the time when driving. Dispensing with sheet metal planking - technically possible for Weymann bodies, but twice as expensive as conventional superstructures - eliminated roaring noises in the interior and saved weight. However, the body turned out to be leaky, so that the wooden frame on some cars began to rot after a while. Production began in the summer of 1927. A practical detail: the interior fittings could be folded down into a bed, which should save the customer motel costs. The sales success was better than with the ÖV4, but still not overwhelming, so that the PV4 Special followed in autumn 1928, which was produced with more flowing lines and a clearer rear window. The stretched bonnet also made it look sportier.

In addition, the PV4 commercial touring car was created, a custom-made PV4 Special, which shone with a large rear door and can be described as the first Volvo estate car .
