The Volvo C70 is a convertible and coupe from Volvo .
The first C70 built on the floor pan of the Volvo 850 and introduced the new nomenclature at Volvo. In April 1997, the coupé first went on sale. The convertible followed a year later, with delivery to Europe only beginning towards the end of 1999.
In May 2006 the second C70 was launched in the German-speaking markets. It has a new safety cell with head airbags in the side door and steel reinforcements . Structures in the rear prevent the open convertible top from penetrating the cell in the event of a rear impact.
In addition to design reasons, requirements for pedestrian protection determine the shape of the windshield. The slope, which is flatter compared to the previous model, reduces the risk of serious head injuries for pedestrians.

In April 1997, Volvo first added a coupé to its product range.
It was followed by the first open Volvo since the P1900 Sport was introduced in 1954. The convertible was introduced in the USA in March 1998 and only came onto the market in Europe in November 1999. Electrically, the soft top opens and closes fully automatically in less than half a minute. When opened, it disappears completely under a fixed flap in the rear with the electrically heated rear window.
When it was launched, the C70 was offered with two turbo engines, the 2.4 l turbo with 142 kW (193 hp) and the 2.3 l T5 with 176 kW (240 hp); further variants of the five-cylinder engine followed.
Facelift
In October 2002, the look of the convertible was changed to include clear glass headlights, a modified radiator grille and new light alloy wheels and body colors. The production of the coupe ended.
Two five-cylinder engines in the convertible have also been revised, the 2.4 T now develops 147 kW (200 PS) at 5700 rpm - previously 142 kW (193 PS) at 5100 rpm, the T5 now develops 180 kW (245 PS) at 5400 rpm - previously 175 kW (240 PS) (at the same speed).
The C70 T5 Cabriolet takes 7.5 seconds to accelerate to 100 km / h and the top speed is 250 km / h.
Production of the C70 Cabriolet also ended at the end of October 2005.

At the IAA 2005, Volvo presented the second generation of the C70, which was only built as a convertible with a folding roof made of steel. It is based on the Volvo S40 / V50 presented at the end of 2003 .
For the first time, Volvo brought a convertible with a folding metal roof onto the market. Official sales began at the end of May 2006. The basic design comes from the Volvo design studio in Camarillo, California .
Building on this, this vehicle was developed in close cooperation between Volvo and the Italian design studio Pininfarina . After the design of the coupé was fixed, the retractable hardtop was constructed from it. Special emphasis was placed on the shape of the stern, which could be made flatter by using a three-part instead of two-part folding roof.
For the production of the second generation, the Volvo factory in Uddevalla was merged by Volvo into the joint venture Pininfarina Sverige AB, founded in 2003, in which Pininfarina SpA holds 60% and Volvo 40%.
There were initially three petrol engines to choose from for the C70: the 2.4-liter five-cylinder, which is available in two output levels with 103 kW (140 hp) and 125 kW (170 hp), and the 2.5-liter five-cylinder with Turbo charging and 162 kW (220 PS). In 2006 a five-cylinder diesel was added. In autumn 2007, the engine range of the C70 was supplemented by the two-liter turbodiesel 2.0D, which was already installed in the C30, S40 and V50 models. This was the first time that a four-cylinder engine was used; all other engines have five cylinders.
Roof kinematics
In the four-seater coupé-convertible category, the folding roof kinematics of the Volvo C70 II is one of the most mechanically complex: Since the C70 II has a comparatively long passenger compartment for four adults, the long steel roof had to be divided into three segments. At the same time, this avoids having to pull the A-pillars and windshield far back.
When open, the smallest middle segment is at the bottom of the trunk, above the longer front segment, and at the top the widest, longest and most curved segment with the rear window and C-pillars. Since the arches are optimally nested in one another, an undeveloped storage space of 200 liters remains under the retracted roof. The ski through-loading option also remains. An interesting design detail is that when closed, no hinges can be seen from the outside or the inside.
The steel roof is moved into the trunk using a scissor mechanism that moves all three segments in a coordinated manner. It is driven by hydraulic cylinders and an electric hydraulic pump, which also takes care of other processes: unlocking and lifting the front segment, opening the trunk lid from the rear, extending the all-weather "parcel shelf", securing the anchoring of the open roof in the trunk and finally locking of the trunk lid.
Advantage: The central drive results in a high level of failure safety and reliability. Disadvantage: Several hydraulic processes cannot take place in parallel, which means that closing takes a comparatively long time of 30 seconds.
When the roof is open, under the protective cover z. B. two travel bags plus two smaller backpacks space, with the roof closed, a mountain bike with removed tires fits in the trunk.
Facelift
The visually revised C70 was presented at the IAA 2009; in November 2009 the market launch was at the dealerships.
In addition to the new bumper, the significantly larger Volvo logo in the radiator grille is striking. The rear lights now work with LED technology . Apart from the visual changes to the front and rear, only subtle changes were made, there were no functional modifications in the interior. In particular, the “floating” center console in the Bang & Olufsen- inspired design was retained. The three-part roof structure was also not changed.

Cessation of production
In April 2013, orders for new cars were only accepted until the middle of the month.
Production of the C70 was discontinued in the course of the closure of the production facility in Uddevalla, Sweden on June 25, 2013, as it was used exclusively for this model and the underlying platform is no longer in production. There will be no successor for the time being.
