Stars in the Euro NCAP - Crash Test (2012) |
The Volvo V40 was a passenger car model from the Swedish car manufacturer Volvo , which was presented at the Geneva Motor Show 2012 and was available from September 15, 2012. It was a five-door compact hatchback sedan . As the brand's entry-level model, it replaced the S40 and V50 , which had not been in the range since May 2012, and also the smaller C30 . For the market presentation, the manufacturer held a six-week Ready for You event on the grounds of the Dresden Exhibition Center from July to August 2012 , which enabled selected people to do extensive test and slalom drives with several vehicles from this series.
In July 2019, production was discontinued without a direct successor model.
Model description
As the last new Volvo, the V40 still has Ford's C1 platform . The body was designed by the American designer Chris Benjamin; he took over the door line of the Volvo P1800 on the rear doors . Volvo only offered a body version. The interior is characterized by a free-standing center console at the front.
An off-road version has been sold as the Volvo V40 Cross Country since the beginning of 2013 . Also at the beginning of 2013, the manufacturer expanded its sporty R-Design product line to include the V40.
The V40 was built in Ghent , Belgium .
technology
The V40 is available with three diesel and three petrol engines. The top version, a turbocharged 2.5-liter petrol engine, develops 187 kW (254 hp). A start-stop system and a brake energy recovery system are standard, and buyers can also choose between automatic and manual transmissions.
As a special feature, the V40 is the first vehicle ever to be equipped with a pedestrian airbag , which in the event of a collision unfolds over the lower third of the windshield and A-pillar in a flash. At the same time, the bonnet is raised automatically to reduce the risk of injury to pedestrians. There is a knee airbag for the driver. Every V40 is also equipped with a city safety system as standard . The backrest of the front passenger seat can be folded down (on request for some equipment).
The chassis has individually suspended wheels, with MacPherson struts at the front and multi-link arms at the rear . The rack and pinion steering is supported electromechanically.
The technology works reliably.
The off-road version V40 Cross Country , offered since 2013, is 15 mm higher. All-wheel drive is available in conjunction with the more powerful T4 (optional) and T5 (standard) petrol engines. All other engines are only available with front-wheel drive.
The sporty R-Design product line has also been around since 2013 . This variant has a modified front grille with vertically arranged LED daytime running lights. The rear apron contains a diffuser with double exhaust pipes. In addition, this variant has a hard sports chassis, aluminum exterior mirror caps, front grille with black piano lacquer and R-Design logo as well as interior details such as blue instrument lighting and black headliner.
Facelift 2016
The revised version of the V40, which has been on the market since April 2016, was presented at the Geneva Motor Show 2016. The revision primarily affects the front section. The V40 now has new headlights that take up the design theme " Thor's hammer", that is, daytime running lights in the shape of a horizontal hammer. In connection with this, the front mask was redesigned in details. There are also changed seat covers.
