The municipal exhibition area of Dresden was originally located on Straßburger Platz (previously called Stübelplatz or Fučikplatz), on the northwestern edge of the Great Garden . The 1st International Horticultural Exhibition (IGA) took place in the adjacent park areas in 1887 . In 1896 the exhibition palace was built on the occasion of the 2nd IGA , which gave the site a face until it was destroyed in the Second World War.

Important exhibitions, such as the German Building Exhibition in 1900, the German City Exhibition in 1903 and the two international hygiene exhibitions in 1911 and 1930 , were located here. From 1922, the Dresden annual shows with changing motifs caught the attention of visitors. From 1928 to 1938 the Kugelhaus enriched the exhibition grounds with its unusual architecture for its contemporary.

In the post-war period, temporary exhibitions took place in the town hall on Olbrichtplatz (formerly Nordplatz or Dr.-Kurt-Fischer-Platz). In 1969, the Fučík Square Exhibition Center with its newly built exhibition halls was put into operation on what is now Strasbourg Square, which was destroyed in the war.

Due to the redesign of the traffic routing, the incompatibility (including traffic issues) of the exhibition location at this point and in connection with the Transparent Factory of Volkswagen AG on Straßburger Platz, the premises of the Dresden Exhibition Company had to be abandoned. Previously, a location analysis from 1991 to 1992 examined a new urban investment for trade fair and exhibition purposes on Straßburger Platz. Since 1999, the fair has been located in the Großer Ostragehege in parts of the ensemble of historic buildings from the former Erlwein slaughterhouse and newly constructed buildings.

This shift of use took place in a larger overall framework because, from an urban planning perspective , it was necessary to redesign the area from the former and increasingly decaying listed urban cattle yard and slaughterhouse in the large eastern enclosure. For this purpose, Dresden proposed this area for an international horticultural exhibition (IGA 2003), which was based on a city council resolution of April 1993. At the same time, an association was founded with the aim of publicly discussing a new design in the Great Ostragehege. He dedicated himself particularly to the idea of a congress and exhibition center and the awareness of the central urban landscape as an ideal value in a large city. In preparation for the IGA project, the city of Dresden launched an international urban development and landscape conservation ideas competition. It provided for the landscaping of the industrial wasteland on the so-called Schlachthofinsel, taking into account a new trade fair and exhibition site, and was carried out in 1995 under the direction of Roland Ostertag . The results of the competition were incorporated into the urban planning and were finally approved by the Dresden City Council in 1998 with the development plan No. 78 Dresden-Friedrichstadt No. 3, Schlachthofinsel . The International Horticultural Exhibition 2003 ultimately took place in Rostock .

The buildings used by Messe Dresden are the remaining former production halls of the former city cattle and slaughterhouse and a newly built entrance hall made of a steel and glass construction. Some minor buildings were demolished during construction. The company premises include the following structural units: Hall 1, Hall 2, Hall 3, Hall 4 (three old building halls were linked with two connecting structures), trade fair foyer (new building), Erlwein Hall, conference floor, catering area, a pavilion and glass walkway (new building). The fair also includes an inner courtyard and open spaces for parking spaces in the vicinity of the central entrance hall and a green area in front of it with an artificial pond. The forecourt to the central entrance hall has a bus stop connection for the Dresden public transport company . The new complex opened on September 17, 1999.

In 2010, the conversion of the Röschenhof into a conference and congress center called BÖRSE DRESDEN began and was completed in May 2011. This means that MESSE DRESDEN and BÖRSE DRESDEN can now hold congresses with up to 10,000 participants.

Between summer 2010 and 2012, exhibition hall 1, the largest event hall in Dresden, was rebuilt so that it can offer a platform not only for trade fairs, congresses and rock concerts, but also for entertainment and classical music. The well-known cellar “ Schlachthof 5 ”, which is located under the foyer of exhibition hall 1, was also included in the renovation.

In 2012, 469,000 visitors attended 313 events. With a turnover of a little more than five million euros, the fair was able to show a profit in its core business. In addition, municipal grants of 1.8 million euros were necessary for interest and repayments for the construction of the exhibition hall.
