The Volvo 850 was such a success that its exterior was only cautiously changed in November 1996 as part of the renaming and facelift to the V70. The front and rear of the car were rounded off a bit, the bumper strips, bumpers and door handles were painted over the entire surface and white indicator glasses were used at the rear. The interior has been redesigned, for example the dashboard has been redesigned in a slightly less angular shape. In total there were over 1800 changes. There were initially no major changes to the engines ; all engines available in the last two years of construction of the 850 were adopted.

The standard equipment of the V70 has been improved compared to the 850. Electrically adjustable and heated exterior mirrors, central locking with radio remote control, power windows as well as four airbags and belt tensioners for the front seats have always been standard.

For the 1999 model year there was another facelift. Together with minor adjustments such as a new Volvo logo for the radiator grille and modified roof rails, the technology in particular has been modernized. All gasoline engines were converted to electronic throttle valves and now meet the Euro 3 standard. The 4-speed automatic transmissions received an adaptive shift logic, the anti- slip control was renamed and improved in STC . The anti-lock braking system was expanded to four channels. In addition, Volvo introduced its WHIPS whiplash protection system and larger side airbags. These now also protect the head of the driver and passenger.

For the year 2000, a 5-speed automatic transmission with adaptive shift logic was offered for gasoline engines without a turbocharger. The gasoline engines with 10 valves were replaced by throttled 20-valve variants.

With the V70, Volvo was able to build on the success of the 850, a total of 373,689 V70s were produced.

Models

V70

The Volvo V70 was delivered in a large number of variants and special models. There was an all-wheel drive version known as the V70 AWD , which, like the V70 XC, was only delivered with the 142 kW (193 hp) turbocharged 2.4-liter gasoline engine. The V70 TDI model was offered with a turbo diesel engine taken over from VAG. The V70 bi-fuel variant with a 95-liter tank for compressed natural gas (CNG) was introduced at the end of 1997. According to Volvo, you should be able to drive 250 km only on gas without having to accept any loss of performance while operating on the gas. It was possible to switch between petrol and gas operation while driving at the push of a button. However, the large natural gas tank reduced the available luggage space by around half, and the coolant temperature indicator was replaced by a level indicator for the CNG tank. Numerous other equipment features, such as on-board computers or a third row of seats, were also not available for bi-fuel models.

V70 XC

The V70 XC (for Cross Country) was an all-wheel drive variant that was intended to appeal to drivers with off-road ambitions. It was introduced in September 1997 and offered for the 1998 model year . Externally, the V70 XC stood out from other models with a roughly grille, partially painted bumpers and angular roof rails, as well as an optional two-tone paintwork. The interior was upgraded for the XC with particularly thick floor mats and hard-wearing partial leather seat covers; full leather was also available as an option. Technical differences were a raised chassis with automatic level control on the rear axle and the standard all-wheel drive with anti-slip control for the front and limited-slip differential for the rear axle. The V70 XC was available with a 4-speed automatic or 5-speed manual transmission and the 2.4-liter five-cylinder turbo gasoline engine with 142 kW (193 hp); in countries with progressive displacement tax, a version with two-liter displacement was used offered.

V70 R / V70 R AWD

The V70 R was a particularly sporty variant that was presented in May 1997. The R models of this generation were available with front-wheel drive (in conjunction with a differential lock) or with all-wheel drive, as well as with automatic or manual transmission. It differs from the other V70 model variants with a slightly modified front apron, blue dials, an exclusive interior with quilted leather-Alcantara seat covers and aluminum or dark burl wood decor. There were also exclusive colors and wheels that were only available for the V70 R.
The engine of the V70 R is a 2.3-liter five-cylinder in-line engine with high-pressure turbocharging and an intercooler and has an output of 184 kW (250 hp) in manual vehicles or 176 kW (240 hp) in vehicles with automatic transmission. Front-wheel drive and manual transmission were only available in the 1998 model year . From model year 1999, only a combination of all-wheel drive and 4-speed automatic transmission was offered. The output was increased to 184 kW (250 PS), all vehicles were delivered as V70R AWD .
A revised version of the R was launched for model year 2000. This model was only available with all-wheel drive and a 5-speed automatic. The five-cylinder in-line engine had a displacement of 2.4 l, high-pressure turbocharging with a charge air cooler and developed 195 kW (265 hp). Only about 400 copies of this model were sold in Germany.

In the spring of 2000, the second generation of the V70 came on the market. The siblings of the car are the slightly smaller S60 sedan and the larger S80 .

This model was created before Ford took over Volvo . A striking design detail was the “shoulders”, which, like the S60, were created by a deep bead below the window. This is a connection to design elements of the Volvo 240/260 series, which all had this "shoulder". The 140 series had this design element as early as the mid-1960s.

Only in-line five-cylinder petrol engines as naturally aspirated or turbo-charged engines, diesel engines and a bivalent petrol / natural gas version called bi-fuel were available . The engine output ranges from 93 kW (126 hp) in the 2.4D to 220 kW (300 hp) in the R model. The V70 is a front-wheel drive vehicle, however some engine variants with all-wheel drive (AWD) are available.

The bifuel version was named the most environmentally friendly car of the year in the FIA EcoTest 2006 (carried out by ADAC) together with the Toyota Prius .

In May 2004 there was a slight facelift . The front got an extended radiator grille and the new equipment lines (Kinetic, Momentum, Summum) had more paint and chrome on the outside, depending on the version. With the new high-quality leather (Sovereign) and the ability to personalize the vehicle with the Volvo Inscription Program , Volvo is trying to meet the significantly increased expectations of its customers.

Other models

V70 R AWD

Volvo V70 R AWD (2003-2007)

In addition to the aforementioned equipment lines, there was also an R model of the V70 from spring 2003 and this time also an S60 R. The second generation V70 R AWD follows the tradition of the Volvo R models 850T5-R, 850 R and the first V70 R. of the first generation, also available as AWD. R stands for Refined in Volvo parlance. The V70R AWD of the second generation was not an equipment variant as described above, but rather a completely modified vehicle, based on the V70-II platform, in the same body shape, but with many changes from the speed-dependent one R-specific steering through to standard equipment. Hardly any of the regular V70 parts are compatible with the R-model parts. Only a few differences between the models compared to the V70R AWD are listed in the article above and below.

The V70 R AWD of this series has a revised front with a front mask used only on the "R" (modified front bumper for better cooling and aerodynamics), silver bi-xenon headlights, R-typical five-spoke Pegasus wheels (8 × 17 and 8 × 18 inches each with 235/45 / R17 or 235/40 / R18 tires) with "R" emblem, a double exhaust system with angled tailpipes, Brembo 4-piston brake calipers front / rear with R- Logo, internally ventilated 330 mm brake discs front / rear, DSTC, the active Four-C chassis with electronically controlled dampers, which determines the driving condition of the vehicle 500 times per second, with three setting options, Comfort, Sport, Advanced, and exclusively with all-wheel drive. In the interior, the R features blue instruments with LED lighting, dashboards partially covered with real leather, three special leather and color variants only available in the R variant, as well as special R sport seats, sport steering wheel and other R-specific details such as the shift gate .

The 2.5-liter in-line five-cylinder engine with KKK 24 high-pressure turbocharger, two charge air coolers and variable inlet and outlet valve control (CVVT) delivers 220 kW (300 hp) ex works. The “R” engine of the V70 R AWD has graphite-coated pistons with modified piston rings, stronger forged connecting rods with fracture-separated bearing caps , a different cylinder head for better cooling at the exhaust valves and the spark plugs, a modified oil pan, and other changes.

V70 Ocean Race

In 2005, Volvo introduced the V70 Ocean Race to coincide with the Volvo-sponsored sailing event . All Ocean Race models were delivered in a special shade of blue with a modified interior and improved standard equipment.

In the summer of 2007, the third generation of the V70 was presented, while the largely identical sedan was sold as the Volvo S80 . The V70 was stretched by 11 cm to 4.82 m and new technical developments, such as a hill descent aid , the tailgate that can be opened automatically with the remote control, the so-called BLIS system, adaptive brake lights and adaptive cruise control were available.

Initially, a six-cylinder gasoline engine with a displacement of 3192 cm³ and 175 kW (238 hp) and a 3.0-liter gasoline engine with a turbocharger 210 kW (285 hp) were on offer. The 2.4-liter five-cylinder diesel engine was initially available with 120 kW (163 hp) and 136 kW (185 hp). In autumn 2007, a 2.0-liter four-cylinder diesel from the PSA group (Peugeot / Citroen), which Ford had also taken over, with 100 kW (136 hp) was added (PSA DW10). The large petrol engine is offered with a 6-speed automatic transmission as standard, the automatic transmission is available as an option for the diesel engine - a 6-speed manual transmission is standard.

Rear view

In the third generation, the bivalent natural gas drive ( bi-fuel ) was no longer offered because the sales figures - with the exception of the natural gas boom in Germany - did not develop sufficiently. As a replacement for gasoline engines, the Flexifuel concept was introduced, which allows bioethanol (E85) to be added as desired .

The V70 2.5FT AFV has been available in Sweden since 2009 and can be ordered directly from Volvo. It is a V70 with a FlexiFuel engine and a retrofitted Prins natural gas system. The manufacturer AFV is retrofitting the cars in the Volvo factory in Torslanda.

From mid-2009 revised versions of the five-cylinder diesel were offered. The 120 kW variant was replaced by a more economical one with 129 kW, with the torque increased to 420 Nm (previously 340 Nm). The D5 with 136 kW has been replaced by a new version with register turbocharging and 151 kW. Optionally, the engine is coupled with a 6-speed automatic transmission, which is standard on the D5 AWD . Furthermore, there has been a consumption-optimized diesel version since the 2010 model year. The 1.6D initially developed 80 kW (109 PS) and was called DRIVe , which Volvo used to designate fuel-efficient diesel versions (narrower tires, lowered body, longer gear ratio and other detailed modifications).

The trunk of the Volvo V70 has a capacity of 575 liters, with the rear seat folded down, 1600 liters. The 3rd generation was available in the Kinetic equipment lines (standard variant with fabric seats, 16-inch alloy wheels, 2-zone automatic air conditioning, leather steering wheel, aluminum trim), Momentum (upscale variant with leather seats, 17-inch wheels, xenon Headlights) and Summum (luxury version with higher quality speedometer unit, additional decorative elements, etc.).

Facelift

In mid-2011, the dashboard in particular was revised as part of the initial maintenance. A central 7-inch information display, which is always standard, replaces the previous retractable navigation screen (5.5-inch for vehicles without navigation). The small screen on the control panel was eliminated and many switches were arranged differently. The side mirrors have also been changed and equipped with LED indicators. All vehicles were given chrome trim strips on the side windows and side and rear aprons painted in the vehicle color.

In mid-2013, the V70 underwent a facelift and further refinements. The radiator grille, which is now rounder, has four chrome-plated horizontal slats and a filigree chrome border. The lower part of the front apron has also been redesigned, so that the separation of the middle air intake from the outer one has been removed and this unit is emphasized by two continuous horizontal chrome strips. The fog lights became square instead of round. With the Kinetic, in addition to the chrome trim on the window frames, the previously standard electric tailgate was omitted.

A characteristic of the facelift version at the rear, in addition to the newly designed bumpers, are the chrome strips under the rear lights and under the Volvo logo. The rear lights retained their external shape, but the lighting functions were rearranged inside.

On April 25, 2016, Volvo stopped production of the V70. The successor is the second generation of the V90 .
