With the introduction of the S80 in August 1998, Volvo consolidated the foundations for a body style that it had introduced with the S40 and V40 models to this day. The main features of this are the V-shaped beads on the bonnet with a protruding nose, the body, which is narrower from the belt line (“strong shoulders”), as well as the rounded rear lights. With the new shapes, Volvo finally left the rough edges that were seen in the V70 (until 2000). The S80 is the first vehicle on the large P2 platform, on which the S60 , V70 (from 2000), XC70 and XC90 are also based.

Volvo gave the S80 numerous innovations; for example the head and shoulder airbag, the whiplash protection system WHIPS ( WHI plash P rotection S ystem), automatic air conditioning with activated carbon filter (no more smells from outside). Thanks to the transversely installed motors, it offers plenty of space for passengers in the front and rear.

There were inline five and inline six-cylinder engines to choose from (diesel only inline five-cylinder); the gasoline engines were available with or without a turbocharger . A bi- fuel variant was also offered, which can be driven with both natural gas and petrol . The engine output ranges from 96 kW (130 PS) for the 2.4 D to the D5 with 120 kW (163 PS) and the top model with 200 kW (272 PS) for the T6.

The S80 is a front-wheel drive vehicle; the 2.5 T with 154 kW (210 PS) was also available with all-wheel drive .

Equipment variants

At the beginning there were the equipment variants Comfort , Premium and the particularly luxurious Executive , to which a few special equipment features were reserved - including a TFT screen system (Rear Seat Entertainment System) in the headrests of the front seats and a cooling compartment behind the armrest. An automatic transmission (Geartronic) was also available.

Facelift

After the facelift in spring 2003 (including clear glass headlights and bumper strips painted in body color) there were the variants Kinetic , Momentum , Summum and the particularly luxurious Executive equipment line , to which a few special equipment features are reserved, including an entertainment system with TFT screen in the back of the front Headrests and a cooling compartment behind the armrest.

In March 2006, a new S80 with a clearly more modern interior and exterior design was presented. In addition to the new in-line six-cylinder engines, the 4.4-liter V8 engine with all-wheel drive ( A ll W heel D drive , AWD for short), already known from the XC90 , was offered for the first time .

In technical terms, the second generation of the Volvo S80 is based on the EUCD platform with transverse engine . This also forms the basis for several other models from the Ford Group ( Ford Galaxy / S-Max , Ford Mondeo or Mazda 6 ) to which Volvo belonged from 1999 to 2010.

The new in-line six-cylinder (SI6 = Short Inline Six) have been designed to be more compact than the previous generation. They are based on the Volvo Modular Engine kit and were built by Ford in Wales. The V8 engine was developed by Yamaha on behalf of Volvo. The 3.2-liter R6 and 4.4-liter V8 petrol engines were only supplied with automatic transmissions.

Facelift

2009

A revised version of the S80 was presented at the IAA in September 2009, which can only be recognized from the outside by a larger Volvo logo than before. There are now new engines under the hood that extend the range downwards.

After Geely bought Volvo, the V8 engine was dropped from the program at the end of 2010. According to Volvo, the reason is the general trend towards saving.

Technical innovations

2011

In May 2011, the S80 received a minor facelift, which brought a revised interior and revised engines with it. The chrome strips (Summum, Executive), which were subject to a surcharge in the previous series, have now been installed as standard in all variants.

The interior was also changed, and fittings were added. The navigation system is integrated under a hood above the center console. Practically all functions and access to the assistance systems can be controlled centrally using the (rotary) buttons on the center console and / or on the extended multifunction steering wheel.

The 2.4 liter five-cylinder diesel engine (D5) received more modern common rail twin turbo technology. This causes a higher acceleration value, more efficient combustion with lower consumption and - due to the exhaust gas recirculation - lower emissions. The output has been increased to 156 kW (215 PS).

Details on the D5 diesel engine
  • Five-cylinder twin-turbo diesel made of aluminum, 2.4 liter displacement
  • Increased power: 156 kW (215 hp), 420 Nm (D5) torque between 1500-3250 min -1 and 440 (D5-wheel drive) Nm of torque between 1500 and 3000 min -1 , 0 km to 100 / h in 7.6 or 7.8 seconds
  • Newly developed were u. a. Camshaft, connecting rods, piston rings, piston cooling valves, eco-vacuum pump, oil pump in oil sump, drive with chain control, operating system for the auxiliary units, fuel pump
  • Lighter weight
  • Lower motor friction
  • Higher fuel efficiency with reduced CO 2 emissions
  • Start / stop technology (manual transmission)
  • 6-speed manual transmission or 6-speed Geartronic automatic transmission each with sport mode (D5) or 6-speed Geartronic automatic transmission with sport mode (D5 AWD all-wheel drive)
  • Lower fuel consumption, combined (l / 100 km): 6.4-4.6, CO 2 mass emissions, combined (g / km): 167-120; CO 2 efficiency class: A / C

2013

In the course of a further facelift, which was carried out in mid-2013, the radiator grille, which was now rounder, was given four horizontal chrome-plated slats and a more filigree chrome border. The lower part of the front apron has also been redesigned so that the visual separation of the middle air inlet from the outer one is removed and this unit is emphasized by two continuous horizontal chrome strips.

Furthermore, the design of the side mirrors has been changed, which as a result have LED indicators. A characteristic at the rear are the chrome strips under the rear lights and under the Volvo lettering, which are now larger.

Production of the S80 ended at the end of March 2016.
