The Diamond DA42 Twin Star is an aircraft from the aircraft manufacturer Diamond Aircraft .

development

After two and a half years of development, the DA42 Twin Star, derived from the DA40 Star , was approved in May 2004. The first flight took place on December 9, 2002 with Christian Dries, Managing Director and owner of Diamond Aircraft Industries, and a flight engineer on board.

The DA42 Twin Star is also fully equipped for instrument flight and is optionally available with an aircraft de-icing system based on de-icing fluid , which enables flights under known icing conditions. This means that this aircraft can be viewed as "all weather suitable".

construction

The aircraft has a high aerodynamic quality and is powered by two 99 kW (135 hp) Centurion 1.7 diesel engines, which can be operated either with diesel fuel or Jet A1 fuel. Newer construction sites are equipped with the Centurion 2.0 as standard. The AE300 diesel engine from Austro Engines with an output of 123.5 kW is installed in the latest version of the Twin Star, the DA42-VI . This engine was approved by the EASA at the beginning of 2009 and also by the FAA in August 2009 together with the aircraft for this type and was also used in the DA40 after approval. The DA42 Twin Star is made of carbon composite construction and a glass cockpit type G1000 equipped. The maximum take-off weight is 1785 kilograms (3935 lbs). The maximum permissible speed is approx. 356 km / h (192 kts).

variants

DA42
Production of the DA42 made in Austria and Canada
DA42 L360
Version equipped with Lycoming IO-360 engines (134 kW), which uses Avgas instead of Jet-A1 . The variant is intended for the American flight school market.
DA42 NG
Variant equipped with Austro Engine AE 300 (168 HP). EASA certified in March 2009 and FAA certified in April 2010.
DA42-VI
Manufactured under the same certificate as the DA42 NG, the maximum take-off weight of the DA42-VI has been increased by 99 kg. New propellers and numerous aerodynamic changes lead to a slightly improved performance compared to the conventional DA42 NG.
DA42 MPP
The twin-engine DA42 MPP (Multi Purpose Platform) is suitable as a multifunctional sensor carrier and, thanks to its equipment (glass cockpit with Garmin G1000), can be used in instrument flight conditions (IFR), with operating speeds of a minimum of 75 kts to a maximum of 152 kts ( IAS ). In monitoring mode / operating mode, the aircraft can remain in the air for up to 12.5 hours without refueling. At 50% power, a maximum range of more than 1350 km is achieved.
The DA42 MPP is designed to carry the following sensor equipment:
  • Large format digital cameras
  • panchromatic & multispectral line scanners
  • hyperspectral line scanners
  • Laser scanner
  • Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR)
  • Gyro-stabilized cameras for “high definition” TV
  • Gyro-stabilized multi-sensor cameras for surveillance tasks
( Border Guard , Executive , Environmental Monitoring, etc.) The UK Department of Defense ordered two aircraft in June 2008.
Aurora Centaur
The Aurora Centaur is a derivative of the DA42 MMP sold by Aurora Flight Sciences , which is designed as an Optionally Piloted Vehicle . On November 28, 2012, the first serial copy was delivered to Armasuisse .
Dominator II
Aeronautics Defense Systems Ltd developed a UAV version of the DA42 called "Aeronautics Defense Dominator" which made its maiden flight in July 2009. It has a maximum flight time of 28 hours, a payload of 900 lbs (408 kg) and a maximum speed of 190 knots (354 km / h) at a maximum altitude of 30,000 feet (9144 m).

operator

The Royal Thai Air Force has been using six machines since mid-2009 and the Jamaica Defense Force Air Wing two machines since 2013 for pilot training. The machines are operated by the 604 Squadron in Don Mueang . The Argentine Army uses the DA42 for surveillance tasks.

A Spanish flight school ordered six machines with a cockpit that corresponds to that of the Airbus or Boeing, with which commercial pilots are to be trained. Future pilots will also be trained at Lufthansa Aviation Training on the DA42 in Grenchen and Rostock-Laage .

Incidents

Between June 2007 and May 2012, 15 people were killed in ten accidents involving the DA42:

  • On June 6, 2007, a DA42 crashed on the flight from Aachen to Valence in France, all three occupants were killed.
  • On September 20, 2007, the pilot of a DA42 on the flight from Krems to Linz had to make an emergency landing in a field near St. Valentin after an engine failure. The pilot was seriously injured, the passenger got away with minor injuries.
  • On September 25, 2007, three people died when a DA42 crashed in Romania.
  • When a DA42 crashed on April 15, 2008 in Jechtingen after a lightning strike, the pilot was killed.
  • On May 29, 2009, a family of three died in Styria when their plane crashed into a forest on the slope of the Schwarzkogel between Hohentauern and Trieben in thick fog .
  • On June 6, 2009, two people were killed in Lower Austria.
  • On July 16, 2011, a 48-year-old pilot intentionally steered a rented DA42 into a single-family house on the edge of the village after flying low over the Swiss municipality of Oberhallau ( SH ) several times . The building was his parents' house, which was still inhabited by his 69-year-old mother. The first rescue workers were able to recover this unharmed from the burning building, and the son, who left a suicide note, was killed.
  • On May 28, 2012, a woman and a man died after a DA42 crashed after taking off from Parchim . Two people survived seriously injured.
  • On June 2, 2016, three people were killed when a DA42 ( aircraft registration number HS-IAN ) crashed near Nakhon Phanom in Thailand after an engine caught fire.
  • On September 12, 2017, four people were killed in the crash of a DA42 (registration number F-HFBS ) near Ghisonaccia in Corsica.
