The DA20 Katana / DV20 Katana is a two-seat light aircraft from the Austrian manufacturer Diamond Aircraft . It is made in both Austria and Canada .
construction
The aircraft is a further development of the HK36 touring motor glider and therefore has very good aerodynamic properties. It differs from the motor glider with a wingspan of 16.3 meters mainly in the shorter span of 10.9 meters and the missing airbrakes .
The differentiation between the DA20 and DV20 versions is not technically decisive. Based on the successful DV20 Katana, which has been built in Wiener Neustadt since 1993 , Diamond Aircraft Canada developed, certified and produced a light, two-seat composite aircraft in 1994: the DA20 Katana. The aircraft is mainly made of fiber-reinforced plastic and is known for its economy. Therefore, it is used as a training aircraft for private and commercial pilots. The DA20-A1 (DV20-A1) with a Rotax engine that can be operated with both MoGas and AvGas is widely used in Germany . The DA20-C1 with an engine from Teledyne Continental , on the other hand, which is less common in Germany , requires AVGAS / 100LL . This version is particularly common in North America.
The big sister of the Katana is the four-seater DA40 motorized aircraft , which can be equipped with a petrol or diesel engine.
Incidents
- On July 20, 2008, a DV20 Katana crashed shortly after take-off from Schwenningen airfield from a height of about fifteen meters in knife flight position with the right wing first. The 47-year-old pilot was killed in the impact and the machine was destroyed.
- On June 30, 2015, shortly after take-off from Frankfurt-Egelsbach airfield, a DA-20-A1 Katana collided with the overhead line of the railway line at the end of the runway and then fell on a passing freight train. A cable harness of the overhead line was torn off over a length of around 150 meters. The 64-year-old pilot was seriously injured in the accident and his passenger was fatally injured.
- On February 2, 2017, the two occupants of a DA-20 katana were fatally injured in a crash near Melle .
- On July 7, 2020, a DV20 Katana crashed in the local area of Wals-Siezenheim . The pilot and his student pilot were uninjured.
