The Frankfurt Egelsbach Airport (branding Frankfurt-Egelsbach Airport ) is a German airfield near the Frankfurt airport . It is classified as a commercial airfield and is located at 117  m above sea level. NHN in the district of Egelsbach and Erzhausen in the Rhine-Main area between Frankfurt am Main , Offenbach am Main and Darmstadt .

history

When it opened in 1955, there was only one grass take-off and landing area, later a designated grass runway. In 1956 there were already 37,000 flight movements , so that in 1966 a paved runway was built to handle around 100,000 flight movements per year. In the 1970s, the number of flight movements rose to over 126,000.

Today the airfield represents a growing commercial location with around 25 companies and around 700 employees and serves as a base for police helicopters for the Hessian police , numerous aviation companies and aviation-related companies, flight schools and clubs.

On July 3, 2004, after a 15-month construction period, the asphalt runway was extended by 410 m to a total of 1400 m. The extension was necessary due to changes in European air traffic regulations in order to maintain commercial operations for aircraft with a takeoff weight of up to 20 tons. For the extension of the stream of had Hegbachs where the protected species bullhead lives, be extended by 700 meters (in the photo visible). A lawsuit by the Federation for the Environment and Nature Conservation Germany (BUND) against the building was dismissed, as were objections from civic associations from surrounding communities such as Erzhausen.

Due to the sharp increase in flight movements with fast-flying aircraft ( High Performance Aircraft - HPA ) after 2004, the traffic mix of fast and slow aircraft had to be equalized in order to continue to guarantee safety and smooth traffic processes. Since March 2008, the airfield has been the only one in Germany to have separate visual approach and departure procedures for fast and slow aircraft.

In March 2009, the company acquired NetJets , which the investment company Berkshire Hathaway of Warren Buffett heard 80% of the shares in the Hessian Flugplatz GmbH Egelsbach of the existing shareholders holding company of the Offenbach district (39.22% shares) and Stadtwerke Offenbach (33.44% ) and Stadtwerke Langen (6.88%). The municipality of Egelsbach (11.02%) and the city of Langen (9.44%) were not allowed to sell due to ongoing petitions and after a decision by the Hessian Administrative Court in Kassel . September 27, 2009 in these two municipalities found referendums held in each of which a majority of voters spoke out against the sale. After four capital increases unilaterally contested by NetJets, the municipal shares fell to a total of 12.27% (Egelsbach 6.61%, Langen 5.66%).

At the turn of the year 2019/2020, NetJets sold its shares in the airport to the real estate company Triwo . The proposed establishment of an instrument approach procedure is also to be pursued under the direction of Triwo .

With the appearance of the ICAO map 1: 500,000 on March 31, 2016, Sector Airspace D (CTR) was converted into a RMZ ( Radio Mandatory Zone ), TMZ ( Transponder Mandatory Zone ) and ATZ (Aerodrome Traffic Zone) in order to comply with the Implementing Ordinance ( EU) No. 923/2012 (SERA) must be taken into account.

Incidents

  • On June 19, 2009, the single-engine Piper PA-18 ( aircraft registration D-ESKS ) manned by trainee pilots and flight instructors gained little height after take-off and tipped over the neighboring Erzhausen sports field during an emergency landing attempt from a low height. While the trainee pilot got away with minor injuries, the flight instructor had to be flown to a clinic with a rescue helicopter, seriously injured. The machine was destroyed.
  • On December 7, 2009 at 4:16 p.m. local time (eight minutes before sunset) a twin-engine turboprop aircraft of the type Beechcraft F90 King Air (registration D-IDVK ) was hit by a fog bank about 3200 meters from runway 27 at high speed during the approach flown the ground. All three inmates were killed. The machine was destroyed. Apparently the pilot's performance was restricted by alcohol and medication.
  • On June 18, 2010 at 12:41 p.m., a single-engine Aquila AT01 (registration D-EHLE ) tipped over to the right during the go-around process and crashed into a field about 180 meters behind runway 09. The pilot was rescued from the wreck shortly after the crash by the crew of a helicopter, seriously injured, and the passenger died at the scene of the accident.
  • On March 1, 2012 at 6:58 p.m., a twin- engine business jet of the type Cessna Citation X (registration number N288CX ) was flown into the ground about four kilometers from runway 27 during a night approach in poor visibility. All five inmates were killed. The machine was destroyed.
  • On June 30, 2015 at 10:42 a.m., a small DA 20 Katana aircraft (registration D-EAGQ ) crashed into the Frankfurt – Darmstadt railway line during the go -around process . Location In the crash, the aircraft collided with the fourth car of the passing freight train. As a result, the overhead line was damaged over a length of 1100 m. The 64-year-old pilot was seriously injured and his 65-year-old wife died at the scene of the accident. Twelve years earlier there had been a similar accident at the same location during an approach in the dark, in which the pilot was slightly injured.
  • On July 9, 2017 at 9:59 a.m., a Reims-Cessna F150L (registration D-EEYP ) crashed into a forest adjacent to the airfield after the 59-year-old pilot noticed a lack of power in the engine during take-off. The pilot was the only person on board and was seriously injured. The aircraft was badly damaged in the accident. The exact cause of the crash is still being investigated by employees of the Federal Bureau of Aircraft Accident Investigation.
