The airfield Breitscheidstraße is an airfield in Breitscheidstraße in Westerwald and is located within the RMZ (areas with radio contact commitment) of the adjacent airport Siegerlandhalle .
The square is open during the day between March and November. No motorized allowed on Sundays and public holidays during lunchtime (13:00 to 2:30 p.m. local) noise reasons LFZ start.
General
The airfield “on the hub” is used for powered aircraft (approved up to 3500 kg), powered gliders , gliders and ultralight aircraft as well as for parachutists . Helicopters (up to 5700 kg) are also permitted. Scheduled flights are not operated. The placeholder is the Breitscheid-Haiger air sports group, which among other things also offers training in gliding and powered flight. On the site there is, among other things, an aircraft yard, a filling station for aviation fuel, a flight school, a guesthouse and a restaurant. The Luftwaffe occasionally rehearses take-off and landing on short runways with Transall machines.
history
In the 1930s, a so-called “model cattle pasture” was created by the Wehrmacht on the Hub, above the village of Breitscheid . In fact, a field airfield was built here and completed in 1938. Because of the airfield, Breitscheid was often the target of Allied bombers during World War II . In 1952, after the Germans were allowed to fly again, a small group began to set up flight operations on the former military airfield. With start-up capital of less than € 60, the first aircraft was built in-house.
Runways
Today the square can boast two parallel runways . The northern one is 785 paved in length and 15 meters wide. With the usable grass area, the total length is 1002 and the width is 30 meters. The southern grass runway is 900 meters long and 30 meters wide. For glider pilots there is a third runway in the south with a length of 250 meters, which is only used in operating direction 25. An extension of the northern runway from 900 to 1000 meters was applied for from the responsible regional council in 2012 and has been approved since May 2016.
Location and directions
The airfield is located in the Hessian Lahn-Dill district between Breitscheid and Rabenscheid . The state road L 3044 leads directly past the square located on a plateau at a height of 559 meters. The Herborn-West motorway junction on the A 45 is 9 km away, the Haiger - Burbach junction (also A 45) 14 km.
Events
In 2009 and 2014, the national youth comparison flight took place in gliding at the airfield. The air sports group now organizes an international air day here every two to three years. The last flight day, now called "Airshow", took place on August 29th and 30th, 2015. The next one is planned for August 21 and 22, 2021.
Others
On July 16, 2011, a gyroplane crashed while approaching the airfield in a gusty cross wind, killing both occupants.
