Rabenscheid is a district of the large community Breitscheid with about 500 inhabitants. The place is located in the Lahn-Dill district in Central Hesse, not far from the state border between Hesse and Rhineland-Palatinate and North Rhine-Westphalia .
geography
Rabenscheid is located at an altitude of 560 m above sea level and is crossed by the Westerwald hiking trail " Rothaarsteig ". Outside the town center is the historic church, which goes back to a defensive defensive tower . The tower was enlarged by adding the nave .
history
In 1398 Rabenscheid was first mentioned in a document under the name Rabinscheid . In 1812 the citizens of Rabenscheid bought the Beilstein Castle for 800 guilders.
The town used to have a train station on the Haiger – Breitscheid railway line , but it was 4 km away in the Aubach Valley .
The municipality Rabenscheid was in the course of administrative reform in Hesse at 31 December 1971 on a voluntary basis in the community Breitscheid incorporated . For Rabenscheid, as for the other formerly independent communities, a local district with a local advisory council and local councilor was formed.
Origin of name
The name Rabenscheid is said to be derived from the large ravens , the clever birds of Wotan , which once filled the densely wooded heights with their sonorous calls, and “Scheid” (“Grenzwald” or “forest” in general).

Local advisory board
Rabenscheid has a five-person local council with a local councilor . After the local elections in Hesse in 2016 , the mayor is Christof Feldmann.
Culture and sights
Regular events
Every year in the center of the village there is a wine festival (in September) and a Christmas market (on the last Saturday before the first Advent), which are organized by the local associations ( rural women , bird protection association, VdK , volunteer fire brigade , Protestant parish and sports club). There is also an annual Mallorca party on the edge of the village in the threshing hall. In addition, from April to September, on the last Friday of the month, a farmers' market is organized by the local associations.
