The Rothaarsteig ( signpost R ) is a 156.8 km long long- distance hiking trail that was opened in 2001 and runs particularly along the main ridge of the Rothaargebirge , a low mountain range in North Rhine-Westphalia (NW) and Hesse (HE), and a detour as part of the Westerwald variant in the Westerwald , a low mountain range in North Rhine-Westphalia, Hesse and Rhineland-Palatinate .

The German Hiking Institute in Marburg awarded the Rothaarsteig the German Premium Trail Hiking Seal , which was valid for three years until December 2014. Since December 2, 2016, the Steig has been certified as a quality hiking trail in Germany by the German Hiking Association .

overview

The Rothaarsteig was opened on May 6, 2001 on the Ginsburg . Its main route leads from Brilon (NW) through the Rothaargebirge mainly south-southwest, including over the Langenberg (highest mountain in North Rhine-Westphalia) to Dillenburg (HE).

Most of the Rothaarsteig lies in the Sauerland-Rothaargebirge nature park . It mostly runs along the Rhine-Weser watershed over mostly wooded mountains, through forest-lined valleys, past flowing water sources , passes natural and cultural monuments and leads, among other things, through nature reserves . The climb uses the existing network of paved and unpaved forest trails and connects mountains and sights in sparsely populated areas such as the Bruchhauser Steine , the Langenberg , the Kahler Asten , the Rhein-Weser-Turm , the Ginsburg as well as the Ruhr , Eder and Sieg - and Lahn spring . Several times he crosses the European long-distance hiking trail E1, which divides the section with him, and between Schmallenberg and Bad Berleburg he meets the WaldSkulpturenWeg .

Despite its course within a low mountain range, the Rothaarsteig is mostly easy to walk. It touches the areas of several medium- sized towns , including Winterberg , through which it runs directly. The climb is complemented by the valley path, which runs particularly through valleys ( Hochsauerland variant ; 13.7 km long) and the Westerwald variant (52.5 km) leading through the Westerwald .

Waymarks

The waymark ( waymark ) of the Rothaarsteig is a white R lying on its back on a red background. The connection paths leading from the valleys to the climb show the same sign, but in black on a yellow background.

course

Main way

The 156.8 km long Rothaarsteig main path, which includes the mountain path and which has the parallel valley path (Hochsauerland variant ) as a climbing variant, mainly leads through the Rothaar Mountains. Following the main path is described as a north-south direction (Brilon → Dillenburg) considered - heights of Hauptwegpunkte usually in meters (m) above mean sea level (MSL; unless otherwise stated loud /) or in exceptional cases in meters above mean sea level (MSL ; explicitly named according to) and partly also with distance kilometers (km; if not otherwise stated according to):

The trail that begins on the Brilon plateau in Brilon on the market square (approx. 450 m) initially leads south in the valley of the Möhne up to the Möhne spring (556 m), then past the Briloner Bürgerwald with the wooden artwork Kyrill- Tor (536 m) Gudenhagen-Petersborn (415 to 580 m) and a little later to the west down through the valley of the Aa tributary Hillbringse ( island ). Then it runs west of the small Hillbringse tributary Deitmecke up to the west shoulder of the Borberg (670.2 m); there you will find the Borbergskirchhof (max. 602 m; km 8.5), remains of the foundations of a monastery church and the Brilon Peace Chapel ( Marienkapelle ).

The trail then leads southeast to Habberg (653.3 m), south to Ginsterkopf (663.3 m) and over the ridge between the Schmala in the east and the Gierskoppbach tributary Limmecke in the west. Crossing the state road  743 laid out on the ridge between Brilon-Wald and Elleringhausen , it runs west to the information center at the Bruchhauser Steinen (up to 756 m; km 17.6) in order to circle these rocks east above Bruchhausen in an elongated left curve to the south.

Then the trail, approaching the valley of the Schmala again from the west, runs to the place of execution (762.6 m) south of its source directly on the border between North Rhine-Westphalia and Hesse , a former court of the old Kurkölner Gogerichts ; The Hoppernkopf summit (805 m) is about 800 m northeast of it . At the place of execution, the trail bends to the southwest and leads to and over the Langenberg (843.2 m; km 24.7), the highest mountain in North Rhine-Westphalia.

The trail then runs over the crossroads at Oberer Burbecker Platz (approx. 795 m) southwards to the Rothaarsteighütte (almost 800 m). There it bends to the east and leads directly south of the Neuer Hagen nature reserve and north of a diabase break that lies in the west shoulder of the Clemensberg (approx. 837 m; with Clemenskreuz ) to the eastern edge of the reserve on the border with North Rhine-Westphalia and Hoppecke spring located in Hessen (approx. 780 m; km 29.3).

The trail then leads south along this border. It passes the Itter spring (approx. 770 m) a few meters to the west and then, again running entirely in North Rhine-Westphalia, the Hopperkopf ( 832.3  m ) about 300 m southwest, and runs in the same direction to the Hillekopf (804.9 m), which it circles northeast. The path then leads down to the Medebach district of Küstelberg (666.1 m) with the Orke spring (646 m) to the south of it . In the village it bends towards the west and a little later crosses state road 872 to the Wagenschmier quarry (approx. 645 m). The trail then crosses Landesstraße 740 and passes the contained Ruhr spring (666.5 m; km 39.4), which is located with a picnic area around 330 m northeast of the Ruhrkopf summit (695.7 m).

After crossing the east flank of the Ruhrkopf near the summit, the trail runs south past the Dumel (720.1 m) south-west to the core town of Winterberg (667.9 m), after crossing the city center, about 600 m northeast of the Herrloh tunnel, the common section of the federal roads 236 and 480 to cross on a bridge. Then it leads to the St.-Georg-Schanze on the Herrloh (732.9 m) . Then the trail runs over the southeast and southern flanks of Poppenberg (745.8 m) and Bremberg (approx. 810 m), after which it crosses the state roads 640 and 540 and through the Hochheide Kahler Asten to the Kahler Asten (841.9 m ; km 49.3), on which the Astenturm (observation tower) is located and the Lenne spring (825 m) is located 400 meters to the west .

Then the trail leads from the Lenne spring south-southeast down from the Kahler Asten and crosses the Landwehr in the Asten area (approx. 780 m), which once served as a fortification, especially to protect the town of Winterberg. From there it turns on the ridge between the Lenne in the north-west and the Odeborn, which also rises on the Kahler Asten, in the south-east, past the Gerkenstein (792.7 m), on which there is a transmission tower and water reservoir , and leads through the villages of Lenneplätze (approx . 735 to 778 m), Neuastenberg (approx. 680 to 780 m), Langewiese (approx. 680 to 723 m) and Hoheleye (657.4 to 712.5 m; km 56.1) or partly past them.

The Friedensquelle (740 m), which feeds the small Emmegraben as a Dödesbach tributary in the Odeborn catchment area , runs to the Heidenstock (752.2 m) southwest of the mountain , a former border marker. About 500 m southwest of it, the trail splits at a junction (752.0 m; km 60.0) into a mountain and valley variant:

The mountain path then leads in a west-northwest direction past Großer (614.5 m) and Kleiner Bamicke (661.4 m), whose peaks are both a little north of the climb, to the forest path crossing (632.4 m; km 69.6) at the Millions Bank refuge , where it meets the valley path .

The 13.7 km long valley path , also known as the Hochsauerland variant, is the most important side path of the Rothaarsteig. Starting after the Heidenstock , it initially runs westwards past a soldier's grave (711.7 m) to the village of Schanze (680 to 733 m), an east-southeast part of Schmallenberg .
