The Röspe (or the Schwarzbach) in the nature reserve Schwarzbachsystem with Haberg and Krenkeltal |
The Röspe , also called Schwarzbach up to the mouth of the Meinscheidbach , in the districts of Olpe and Siegen-Wittgenstein in North Rhine-Westphalia is an 8.6 km long, northwest and orographically right tributary of the Eder near the village of Röspe in the Rothaar Mountains . The Röspe by name is about 2.4 km long.
Surname
The name Schwarzbach is derived from the color of the stream water. The red-black color is caused by the high proportion of dissolved humic substances and iron oxide in the water.
course
The Röspe rises as Schwarzbach in the Olpe district. The source of the brook, which runs entirely in the Sauerland-Rothaargebirge Nature Park , is located about 700 m southwest of the Rhein-Weser Tower at an altitude of about 632 m above sea level. NHN . It flows through a partly wooded, partly open valley:
Initially, the Schwarzbach turns as a small trickle in a south-westerly direction, passing the Westerberg ( 662.1 m ) south-east and the Eggenkopf ( 647.3 m ) with the Panorama-Park Sauerland Wildlife Park to the east. Then it runs approximately to the south and into the nature reserve Schwarzbachsystem with Haberg and Krenkeltal . After a while he picks up the Kattmecke on the right side . From there it turns in a south-easterly direction until it overflows a ford (approx. 517 m ) directly after a wooden bridge with the Rothaarsteig . Then it takes on another nameless tributary on the right-hand side and the Habecker Bach (Habecke) , which feeds from many spring rivulets . A little further down the stream, after a nameless tributary flows into it, the stream turns again to the southeast. The Lange Dörnbach joins on the right . Immediately afterwards the brook pierces the route of the former Altenhundem – Birkelbach railway line (the railway bridge there no longer stands).
About 550 meters below it, the Schwarzbach reaches the Siegen-Wittgenstein district and the ford (approx. 473 m ) on the border of the district , where an unnamed stream flows in on the right. From there, the Schwarzbach flows in an east-southeast direction through the Eder nature reserve ( LP Erndtebrück) . In it, it takes up the Langes Meinscheid (Meinscheidbach) brook on the left, from where the brook is only called Röspe. So named it flows through from now on open meadow valley, passing several ponds, and takes about to Erndtebrücker district Röspe left side another unnamed creek on. In Röspe there is still an unnamed stream flowing on the left and the interest rate on the right .
Shortly after crossing under the state road 720 (Röspe – Erndtebrück) , the Röspe joins the Eder flowing from the south a little below Röspe at a height of about 449 m ; The Erndtebrück – Bad Berleburg railway runs east of its mouth .
Catchment area and tributaries
The catchment area of the Röspe is 37.013 km². Considered downstream, their tributaries include:

The river system can be seen to have three main arms, of which the Schwarzbach is the middle one. The left main arm, the Meinscheid, drains the north of the catchment area:
-
Meinscheidbach
- (left and main source stream) Lange Meinscheid
- (r) Short opinion
- (l) Dengessiepen
The Zinse drains the south, the main right arm, which has only left tributaries:
-
Interest
- (l) Great means
- (r) Small means
- (l) Langegraben
- (l) Zwisselsgraben
- (l) hedge ditch

The catchment area of the Röspe is limited as follows (counterclockwise, starting at the estuary in the east):
- the Burgkopf -Heiligenholz-ridge (up to 661.1 m) and the eastern flank of the Hohen Hessel (743.4 m) in the north east
- the main ridge of the Rüsper Rothaar between the Wildhöfer (727.7 m) in the north over the Milsenberg (670.3 m) in the west to the Riemen (678.2 m) in the southwest
- the middle ridge of the room ( 645.6 m in the center) in the southwest and its extension over the Zinsekopf (617.3 m) to the Zinser ridge (590.3 m, at the end summit 563.1 m) in the south to the southeast
The ridge from the Rothaarkamm over the Schmalenberg (644.9 m) to the Hermeskopf (613.1 m) separates the Zinse catchment area from the rest; it corresponds almost exactly to the Wittgenstein part (districts Zinse, Womelsdorf and Birkelbach), since the district boundary runs over the ridge and continues further north, beyond the Röspe, on the Burgkopf ridge. The estuary around Röspe is of course also Wittgensteinian.
Only about 300 people live in the catchment area of the Röspe, almost all of them in Wittgenstein or in today's urban area of Erndtebrück:
For comparison: In the neighboring, somewhat smaller catchment area of the Kappel , around 2800 people live in Wingeshausen and Aue .
Protected areas
In the upper and middle part of the Schwarzbachtal lies the nature reserve (NSG) Schwarzbachsystem with Haberg and Krenkeltal ( CDDA -Nr. 165492; designated 1961; 3.1516 km² ), to which NSG Eder ( LP Erndtebrück) (CDDA -Nr. 555560743; 2011; 56.21 ha ) adjoins. The first-mentioned NSG is 3.1181 km² as a fauna-flora-habitat- area Schwarzbach system with Haberg and Krenkeltal (FFH-Nr. 4915-302), and the second-mentioned NSG is partially part of the FFH-area Eder between Erndtebrück and Beddelhausen ( FFH no. 4916-301; 1.3372 km²). On the valley flanks of Schwarzbach and Röspe, parts of the landscape protection area (LSG) of the Olpe district (CDDA no. 555555098; 1984; 265.0307 km²) and the latter of the LSG Erndtebrück (CDDA no. 389566; 2011; 60.6865 km²).
After the spruce trees in the Bachtal had been cleared to restore their former condition, there are again many endangered animal and plant species (e.g. bats and peat moss) in the diverse meadow landscape.
hike
The Rothaarsteig leads through parts of the Schwarzbachtal . Otherwise there are a number of paths along Schwarzbach and Röspe. Since there are several fords in the brook valley, stepping stones have been placed there for hikers.
