The Westerberg is 662.5  m above sea level. NHN high mountain top in the Rothaar Mountains . It is located near Rinsecke in the North Rhine-Westphalian district of Olpe . The leisure park Panorama-Park Sauerland Wildpark is located on site and the Rhein-Weser-Turm observation tower is close by .

geography

location

The Westerberg rises in the Sauerland-Rothaargebirge nature park on the western roof of the Rothaargebirge main ridge in the district of Kirchhundem . About 7 km (as the crow flies ) east- south- east of their eponymous core town, it is located between the districts of Oberhundem in the north-north-west, Rüspe in the south-east, Heinsberg in the south-west, Marmecke in the west and Rinsecke in the west-north-west, the latter being the closest village. To the northeast is the Stengenberg (706.5 m) and the Hohe Hessel ( 743.6  m ) and southwest of the Eggenkopf ( 647.3  m ).

Natural allocation

The Westerberg belongs in the natural spatial main unit group Süderbergland (No. 33), in the main unit Rothaargebirge (with Hochsauerland ) (333) and in the subunit Westrothaarhöhen (333.4) to the natural area Westliche (Rüsper) Rothaar (333.41), whereby northwest in the main unit Südsauerländer Bergland (336 2 ) and in the subunit Südsauerländer Rothaarvorhöhen (336 2 .5) the natural area Hundemgrund (Hundemtal; 336 2 .53) connects.

Rhine-Weser watershed and flowing waters

The Rhine-Weser watershed runs over the Westerberg : The water of all flowing waters that run northwards from there, such as the Lütge Rinsecke , which rises on the western flank of the mountain in the leisure park, reaches the Rhine through the Hundem , Lenne and Ruhr . In contrast, that of the streams that run in southeastern directions, such as the Röspe (mostly also known as the Schwarzbach ) passing the hilltop to the south , flows through the Eder and Fulda into the Weser .

Protected areas

To the east, south-east and south of the wooded Eggenkopf lies the Schwarzbachsystem nature reserve with Haberg and Krenkeltal ( CDDA no. 165492; designated in 1961; 3.12  km² in size) and an equally large fauna-flora-habitat area with the same name (FFH no . 4915-302). Apart from the areas of the amusement park, the survey also includes areas of the landscape protection area Kreis Olpe (CDDA no. 345041; 1988; 262.87 km²).

Leisure, hiking and traffic

A little below a knoll east-northeast of the Westerberg is the Rhein-Weser-Turm , a lookout tower from which there is a panoramic view of, among other things, the mountains of the Rothaargebirge and Sauerland. Parts of the leisure park Panorama-Park Sauerland Wildpark are located on the western slope of the mountain and on the neighboring mountain Eggenkopf . There is a ski lift just 500 m north of its crest . The Rothaarsteig , Wilhelm-Münker-Weg and Christine-Koch-Weg lead past the Westerberg as hiking trails .

North past the hilltop, the country road  553 , built between 1881 and 1884 as "Hundem-Eder-Provinzialstraße", leads curvy from Oberhundem in the north-west, passing the Rhine-Weser tower , through Rüspe to the Erndtebrücker district Röspe in the south-east. District road  22, which runs roughly in an east-west direction, branches off from this road, which touches the entrance to the amusement park around 900 m west-north-west of the summit and then runs to the Kirchhundem district of Rinsecke.
