geography

location

Landscape near Oberhundem

Oberhundem is located west of the main ridge ( Rothaarkamm ) of the Rothaargebirge about 6 km east of the core town of Kirchhundem in a basin at about 412  m above sea level. NN . In the Sauerland-Rothaargebirge nature park , it is located directly northeast of the confluence of the Wigge ( Wiggesiepen ) in the upper reaches of the Hundem flowing through the village . While grassland farming is practiced in the undeveloped valley areas, the high areas are continuously covered by Christmas tree crops and high forest spruce .

Extension of the local area

Until around 1950, Oberhundem was divided into Unterdorf and Oberdorf, which meet at the junction with Rüsper Straße near the church. These two districts are mostly in the valley floor. Over the past 50 years, the slopes have been increasingly built and further districts have grown on the Hardt and Heisternberg. In 1969, about 500 m south of the village in the valley of the Wigge tributary Lütke Rinsecke, a holiday home area was built.

history

Evidence that indicates the existence of Oberhundem goes back to the 14th century (examples include: 1338: curtem in superiori Hundeme, 1368: Oeuenhundem, 1393: in the kerspele van Oeverenhundem and others). The place name is based on the water name Hundem . A reference to the Germanic "hunda" for "swell" leads to the possible content of the name "swell brook". The "superior" preceding the place name is due to the fact that it is located further upstream compared to Alten- and Kirchhundem.

On July 1, 1969, Oberhundem was incorporated into Kirchhundem.
