history

The indirect first mention comes from 1398. The place formerly belonged to the political municipality Kohlhagen in the office of Kirchhundem. In terms of parish, it has belonged to the Catholic parish of St. Mariae Visitation, Kohlhagen, since 1656. The medieval place name is to der Wedermoede , a place name that probably indicates a swampy, marshy, wooded area. This place name has changed over time to today's place name. At the same time, there was also the place name to der Wiedermöllen in the 16th and 17th centuries , which can be associated with the mill that had existed in the place . There is a Catholic chapel in the village, built in 1901 and consecrated to St. Matthias . A previous building stood in the same place. In the Middle and Late Middle Ages, metalworking took place in Wirme , as shown for example by the family and farm names Schmelzer and Schmidt .

Early clues about the size of the place can be found in an appraisal register (used to collect taxes) for the year 1543. According to this, there were 12 taxpayers in “Wirmede” (the highest taxes were attributable to Johann Schmaltzer, Henrich Peters, Henrich Schmidt and Henrich Platten ); this number could have coincided with the farms or houses existing at the time.

Until the beginning of the 19th century, the farms were fiefdoms of the bailiffs of Elspe .

In 1904 the village received its own elementary school. The school hall was first housed in the sexton's house at the Kohlhagen parish and pilgrimage church, later in the Grünewald house called Trippmann, built in 1905. In 1930 a new primary school building was inaugurated. The one-class school was taught until the school was closed on July 26, 1967. On April 26, 1904, the village was ravaged by a devastating fire that killed five houses, a water mill and two outbuildings. The former mill estate with around 80 acres of land was sold in 1931 to the sisters of the choir from St. Augustine - Michaelskloster - Paderborn . The nuns continued to work on the estate until 1965. Then the Order sold the properties again. A fire fighting group of the volunteer fire brigade has existed since 1930. In 1959 a fire station was built for them. In 1991 the fire fighting group received rooms in the listed barn of the Stute farm called Kusen. In 2013/2014 the fire fighting group built a new fire station with a training room on part of the children's playground with financial support from the Kirchhundem community. The village has been connected to the electricity supply since 1921, and its own water pipeline was built in 1931 . In 1990 an antenna cable was laid by the working group “ Our village should be more beautiful ”. This counteracted the disfigurement of the townscape caused by a large number of satellite dishes .

The town of Wirme has been participating in the competition “Our village should be more beautiful” or “ Our village has a future ” since 1973, with some outstanding successes .

As of 1989, of the 166 inhabitants at the time, 157 were Roman Catholic, 7 were Protestant and 2 were of a different religion.

Wirmer adventure trail

The Wirmer Erlebnisweg was built by the residents on the occasion of the 2010 competition “Our village has a future”. The path begins on the crossroads west of the village and continues in an easterly direction to Kohlhagen. Along the way, there are currently thirteen different peculiarities in the landscape and in the village with explanatory boards:

  • Processional cross of the Kohlhagen Corpus Christi procession on the wayside
  • Bundle of ravines on the wayside divide
  • Pinge as a relic of earlier mining
  • Water tank of the earliest Wirmer water pipe
  • Mary's shrine
  • Monument store of the former mill estate
  • St. Matthias Chapel
  • Natural stone wall
  • Memorial cross from the Nazi era
  • former Meilerplatz
  • Pinge as a relic of previous mining activity
  • Seven pain path to the pilgrimage site of Kohlhagen
  • Hohlweg as a former church path from Wirme to Kohlhagen and feeder for carters to the "Kriegerweg".

On the one hand, the residents of Wirme actively deal with their own history through the adventure trail. On the other hand, they provide information to hikers who use this route as a feeder path to the “Rothaarsteig”.

In the community competition "Our village has a future" in 2010, the village received a special prize for the Wirmer Erlebnisweg and was able to participate in the 2011 district competition.

The village's regular events include the Agatha mass, which has been celebrated on the basis of a vow in early February since 1905, the chapel's patronage festival on February 24, the Corpus Christi procession and the Wirmer wild boar barbecue (village festival), which is celebrated on Ascension Day.
