It lies at an altitude of around 320 to 380 m above sea level. In the east lies the 505 m high Hohe Lohe, in the southwest the 545 m high, in the northwest the 586 m high Alberstein and the 581 m high Hohe Bracht and in the north the 482 m high Krähenberg.

Neighboring places

history

The first written mention of Hofolpe from 1454 with the spelling Hoeffoelpe is relatively late. The basic word of the place name is a water body name, which means something like "creek in a river valley". With the defining word “Hof”, the place name can be interpreted as “Hof an der Olpe”.

Early clues about the size of the place can be found in an appraisal register (used to collect taxes) for the year 1543. According to this, there were 11 appraisers in “Hoffolpe” (the highest taxes were due to Hanß Stelken); this number could have coincided with the farms or houses existing at the time.

Religions

Due to the fact that it was part of the Electoral Cologne Duchy of Westphalia for centuries, Hofolpe is still predominantly Catholic. The place belonged to the Catholic parish of St. Peter and Paul Kirchhundem. After the construction of the Catholic Church of St. Antonius in 1905/06, the village received its own clergyman in 1910 and was finally separated from Kirchhundem as a parish vicarie in 1923. The religious structure of the population changed in Hofolpe, in particular due to the flight and expulsion of people from the former eastern regions of the German Empire after the Second World War. Further changes in this regard have occurred due to recent migratory events.

As of December 31, 2014, 575 Catholic and 55 Protestant Christians live in Hofolpe. In the population statistics, 110 people are also named without information on a religious affiliation, including those who do not belong to any religion as well as those who are Muslim.

Incorporations

From 1843/44 until the municipal reorganization on July 1, 1969, Hofolpe was a place in the Kirchhundem municipality belonging to the Kirchhundem office. With the municipal reorganization, the place came to today's municipality of Kirchhundem.

Population development

At the time of the municipal reorganization on July 1, 1969, Hofolpe had 1,047 inhabitants. Until 1974 the population increased slightly to 1,095, but then decreased in the following years: 1978 = 1007, 1985 = 943, 1990 = 919. According to the population statistics of the municipality of Kirchhundem as of December 31, 2014, the village still had 740 inhabitants.

Economy and Infrastructure

The townscape of Hofolpe is shaped by the paper mill of the Grünewald brothers, which was built at the end of the 19th century on the site of the former Hofolper ironworks. The company is one of the most important industrial locations with numerous jobs within the Kirchhundem community.

traffic

The village is criss-crossed by two important traffic connections in South Westphalia, namely the B 517 and the Ruhr-Sieg Railway . There is no longer a train stop here. On the railway line opened in 1861 there was a 63 m long tunnel in the village, which was cut open in 1963. In this context, the main road was laid parallel to the railway line and the now separated parts of the village were connected by two bridges. The construction work for these measures lasted until 1977.

education

Hofolpe has a kindergarten sponsored by the Catholic Church. The town no longer has its own school. Primary school students attend the cath. Primary school St. Christophorus in Kirchhundem.
