While grassland farming is practiced in the undeveloped valley areas, the high areas are mostly covered by Christmas tree crops and spruce forest. The Rahrbach flows through Welschen Ennest. It drains over the Olpebach and thus over Hundem and Lenne to the Ruhr .

history

General

Welschen Ennest was first mentioned in 1334. With around 1600 inhabitants, the village is the second largest village in the municipality of Kirchhundem after the main town of Kirchhundem.

Early clues about the size of the place can be found in an appraisal register (used to collect taxes) for the year 1543. According to this, there were 35 subject to appraisal in “Welschen Endest” (the highest taxes were due to Valentin Aßwiter, Hanß Heißkotter, Henrich Schwermmer and Henßgen in the Wolfshorn); this number could have coincided with the farms or houses existing at the time.

Cultural history of the region

There are numerous visible traces in the area that old mining was carried out at this point. However, nothing has been proven to date. There are also numerous old pits on the B 517 . Culture is the West German down ( westfälisch ) speaking location on the Uerdinger and Benrather line identified herein as Isoglossenbündel together the language boundary for mosel fränkisch and West German medium speaking Siegerlandhalle form.

Early industrial history

Between Welschen Ennest and Kirchveischede , part of the so-called mountain road in this area still runs in the woods. On this road, which leads from Siegen to Arnsberg , the charcoal required for the production of pig iron was extracted in the corresponding kilns in the Middle Ages and possibly also in prehistoric times. In addition, the remains of racing furnaces show traces of early iron production.

Tobacco products were produced from the 19th century to the 20th century. There was still a cigar factory in Welschen Ennest until around 1967. Coffee roasters also settled there, the last coffee roastery closed around 1998.

The Rahrbach tunnel, which is directly connected to the Welschen Ennester train station, was repeatedly the target of bombing raids during the Second World War . However, these were unsuccessful.

Culture and sights

The old town center around the church and Marienbrunnen, which stands on the site of the local chapel that was demolished in 1906, is worth seeing.

Buildings

The St. Johannes Baptist Church was completed around 1903 and replaced the old chapel in the center of the village.

There are remains of a cable car from Silberg to Welschen Ennest, which was used to transport ore. It was connected to the Welschen Ennest train station and handled a large amount of goods at the Welschen Ennest train station.

In the nearby forests, boundary stones from past centuries can be found in various places. The village lies at the interface between Kurköln and Nassau , on the border between Sauerland and Siegerland . Remains of the border wall on the outskirts, which the Nassau-Siegen counts built around 1420, are still preserved today . Not only at the time of the Reformation did the border repeatedly lead to conflicts. The boundary stones between Kurköln and Nassau date from around 1690 and have been preserved to this day.

One of the most important structures from modern times is the pedestrian bridge over the railway line from the 1950s or 1960s. It is extraordinary because of its arch shape.

Welschen Ennest station

Station building until 2008

Welschen Ennest was a stop when the last section of the Ruhr-Sieg line began operating on August 6, 1861. Around 1910 it was expanded into a medium-sized train station.

The central platform, which was once largely roofed over, had to be replaced by a DB Plus point due to its dilapidation .

Depending on the outcome of a legal dispute between the municipality and the Deutsche Bahn or the Federal Railway Authority involved, the station system should be renewed as part of a modernization offensive by the state of North Rhine-Westphalia. After the end of the legal dispute, two new outer platforms were created and the old central platform closed. The pedestrian underpass and the old signal box have now been removed. In addition, the level crossing was expanded to include another pedestrian crossing.

The station building was renovated between 2008 and 2010 by a private investor.

education

The children from Welschen Ennest and the smaller surrounding towns can first attend the Catholic kindergarten or the Montessori children's house and later the Catholic primary school St. Johannes. Secondary schools are located in Kirchhundem and the neighboring municipalities of Lennestadt , Olpe and Siegen .
