Benedikt Lindemann

Benedikt Maria Lindemann , OSBCam (* 1958 as Gerhard Lindemann in Welschen Ennest , Kirchhundem ) is a German monk of the Benedictine congregation of the Camaldolese. He was abbot of the Dormition Abbey in Jerusalem from 1995 to 2011 .

Life

Lindemann kicked his conscientious objection and civilian service the congregation of Benedictines in the Mission Benedictine Königsmünster in Meschede in. In Barcelona ( Spain ) he learned, with the permission of his abbot, Taijiquan, an internal martial art developed in the Chinese Empire . He also dealt with Indian meditation techniques. He worked as a novice master in the abbey in Meschede .

In 1995 he was elected abbot of the Benedictine Dormition Abbey in Jerusalem and in 2003 he was confirmed in this office for a further eight years. In 2011 he was followed by Gregory Collins . Abbot Benedict devoted himself in Jerusalem in particular to peace work between Israelis and Palestinians , Christians , Jews and Muslims .

Lindemann has been working in hospital pastoral care since the end of 2011 and worked in the Jerusalem House of the Dormition Abbey in Hildesheim until it was dissolved. Since 2013 he has been committed to founding a new Benedictine community at the Röderhof near Diekholzen , in 2019 he joined the Benedictine order together with another monk in the more contemplative and hermit-oriented Congregation of the Camaldolese, who focus on St. Romuald returns.

Awards

Benedikt Lindemann was invested in the Order of Knights of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem in 2000 . In 2004 he was awarded the Göttingen Peace Prize for his commitment .
