Gregory Collins

Gregory Collins OSB (* 1960 in Belfast , Northern Ireland ) was the sixth abbot of the Dormition Abbey in Jerusalem .

Life

Gregory (Earl) Collins studied Byzantine Studies and Scholastic Philosophy at Queen's University Belfast and the British School of Archeology in Athens . 1989 Collins joined the Congregation of Benedictines in the Abbey Glenstal at. In 1991 he received his doctorate in Byzantine Studies in Belfast and was a teacher in Nigeria. From 1992 to 1996 he taught at Glenstal Abbey School. In 1994 he made his profession and was ordained priest in 1995 . After studying depth psychology at the CG Jung Institute in Zurich , he became head of the Glenstal Abbey School in 1998.

From 2002 to 2008 Gregory Collins taught Orthodox theology and the history of theology at the Pontifical Athenaeum Sant'Anselmo in Rome . From 2004 to 2008 he was director of the Monastic Institute in Sant'Anselmo. He lectured in the theological academic year Jerusalem of Dormition and at the Ratisbonne Institute of the Salesians in Jerusalem. Since 2008 he has taught Byzantine theology at the University of Limerick .

In 2011, Gregory Collins was elected abbot of the German-speaking Benedictine Abbey Dormition on Mount Zion in Jerusalem in an electoral chapter in Jerusalem under the leadership of Abbot Primate Notker Wolf OSB . He succeeded Benedikt Lindemann OSB, who had held the office since 1995. On June 22, 2016, Gregory Collins announced that he would end his service as abbot on June 29, 2016, leave Dormition Abbey and return to his profession in Glenstal after a Sabbath period. Earl Collins has been a priest in the Anglican diocese of Ely since 2018.
