Bernhard Maria Alter

Bernhard Maria Alter OSB (* 1946 in Poland ) is a Polish Benedictine monk and icon painter . He has been abbot of the Dormition Abbey in Jerusalem since 2018 .

Life

Bernhard Maria Alter studied philosophy and theology in Kraków and art in Russia. In 1970 he joined the Pauline Order in the pilgrimage site of Jasna Góra in Częstochowa, Poland, and made his profession . In 1973 he was ordained a priest . He worked in pastoral care in Bavaria for over 20 years. In 2000 he joined the Benedictines in the Dormition Abbey and, together with other monks from the Dormition, built the re-established Benedictine convent in Hildesheim ("German representation of the Benedictine abbey Hagia Maria Sion Jerusalem"), where he has lived since 2003.

Since 2016 he has been master of novices in the Benedictine Abbey of the Dormition on Mount Zion in Jerusalem. Nevertheless, he lived as a hermit in the Judean desert .

On February 20, 2018, the 20-member monastic community of the Dormition Abbey, under the leadership of Abbot President Ansgar Schmidt OSB, elected Father Bernhard Maria Alter as abbot for eight years. Alter succeeds Gregory Collins OSB, who stepped down in 2016. In the meantime, Abbot President Ansgar Schmidt OSB had appointed the Jerusalem monk Nicodemus Schnabel OSB as Prior Administrator for a maximum of 18 months .
