Nicodemus Claudius Schnabel OSB (* as Claudius Schnabel on December 11, 1978 in Stuttgart ) is a German religious , Eastern Church expert and press spokesman for the Dormition Abbey in Jerusalem . He was the Abbey's Prior Administrator from 2016 to 2018 .

Life

Schnabel was baptized as a Protestant and grew up as a child of divorce with his mother, an actress. At the age of 13 he came to the Catholic faith , but rejects the designation convert because he never practiced an evangelical faith. He studied philosophy and Catholic theology in Fulda , Munich , Münster and Jerusalem . He wrote his diploma thesis in 2002 at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich on the liturgical vestments and insignia of the deacon, presbyter and bishop in the churches of the Byzantine rite . In 2003 he entered the Benedictine Abbey of the Dormition on Mount Zion in Jerusalem and took the religious name Nicodemus . In 2004 he made his temporary profession . In 2009 he was solemnly professed and ordained a deacon . In 2013 he was ordained a priest . In 2013 he was awarded the liturgical study The Liturgical Adoration of the Saints of the Old Testament in the Latin Church. Attempt to read historical and ecumenical traces with Hans-Jürgen Feulner at the University of Vienna ; the dissertation was awarded the dissertation prize of the Catholic Theological Faculty of the University of Vienna in 2014.

Nicodemus Schnabel was subprior and is ceremonial and rector ecclesiae of the Dormition, foreign pastor for the German-speaking Catholics in Israel and Palestine and press spokesman for his monastery. He heads the joint theological library of the Abbey and the Jerusalem Theological Year and is the editor of the "Jerusalem Theological Forum".

After a one-week visit to the monastery by Abbot President Ansgar Schmidt OSB, Nikodemus Schnabel was appointed Prior-Administrator of the Dormition for a period of 18 months on August 26, 2016 . As a prior administrator he has the same rights and duties as an abbot , but no pontifical rights as an abbot. In 2018, Bernhard Maria Alter OSB was elected as the new abbot and successor to Gregory Collins OSB. Nicodemus Schnabel managed, above all, to bring calm to the convent, especially after attacks by extremist Jews, an arson attack after Pope Francis' visit in May 2014 in the neighboring Upper Room in the Dormition Basilica and after the arson attack in June 2015 the associated Tabgha monastery on the Sea of ​​Galilee with fire damage in the millions and personal injury. In addition, Schnabel managed to obtain funds from the federal government that were used for the urgent renovation of the Dormition complex, which was consecrated in 1910. In 2018, Bernhard Maria Alter was elected as the new abbot of the abbey and replaced Nicodemus Schnabel, who had previously been the interim director of the Dormition on Mount Zion in Jerusalem.

Because Schnabel succeeded in including the Dormition Abbey in the coalition agreement of the 19th parliamentary term , he was, according to Fabian Klask in the weekly newspaper Die Zeit , “the best lobbyist” at the coalition negotiations in 2017/18.

From October 2018 to October 2019, Nicodemus Schnabel worked as a consultant in the newly created “Religion and Foreign Policy” department at the Foreign Office in Berlin . The office was mandated for one year and took place as part of his sabbatical as a former major superior .

Nicodemus Schnabel was a participant at the religion summit in Lindau on Lake Constance , which the organization " Religions for Peace " organized in August 2019 as the 10th world conference.
