Ceremonial

A Zeremoniar or Ceremonies , and master of ceremonies , is in the liturgy of the Roman Rite for the coordination and the smooth running of a worship service charge. In doing so, he supports the celebrant or liturgist who, as the head of the divine service, is responsible for the liturgical management. Before the liturgical reform of the Second Vatican Council, the assistant presbyter had a similar task .

A ceremonial is used primarily for pontifical offices or church services with an unusual or extensive process or the participation of an unusually large number of participants. Cathedral churches usually have permanent ceremonies. Ceremonies can also be used in other churches if circumstances so require.

Ceremonies

Depending on the circumstances, the task is carried out by priests , deacons or even lay people who are well versed in liturgy . Bishops often have personal ceremonies who prepare the liturgical celebrations for them and organize their implementation; often this is the bishop's secretary .

Some higher religious superiors have ceremonies who are particularly responsible for the special celebrations such as religious vows and the sacrament of ordination of the province or the monastery. Even within an abbey , a monk or a nun usually has the office of ceremonial.

A special ceremonial is the master of ceremonies of the liturgical celebrations of the Pope , who is responsible for all services with the participation of the Pope or with participation on his behalf. Monsignor Guido Marini currently holds this office.

tasks

The ceremonial should ensure that the liturgical rules are observed and that liturgical celebrations take place calmly and with dignity. One can also compare the ceremonial with a "director" for liturgical affairs. Skills and inclinations of individuals should be recognized and used accordingly. The needs and wishes of the worship participants must also be taken into account. Every major service is preceded by time-consuming preparation. In the case of extraordinary church services, the process may be explained and rehearsed beforehand. Dealing with other people is very important. In doing so, the ceremonial must pay attention to a certain authority as well as friendly and appreciative interaction with the people entrusted to him. Altar servers are often children and adolescents, so that a certain skill in dealing with them is also required.

During the liturgical celebrations, the ceremonial wears a liturgical robe , usually a cassock or gown with a choir shirt , and as a priest, possibly also choir clothes or albums .
