geography

The village of Kruberg belongs to the southern mountainous region of the Rhenish Slate Mountains , which is also known as the southern Sauerland or Olper country. It belongs to the so-called Bilsteiner Bergland.

Geographical location

In the south of Kruberg lies the Drewer Wald with the 483.2 m and 470.4 m high Langenbach heads, in the west southwest the 589.2 m high Engelsberg, in the north the 560.1 m high Vogelsang and the 563.2 m high Stemberg . To the east opens the valley of the Rahrbach, which is called "Olpe" from Welschen Ennest and flows into the Hundem in Kirchhundem. The village lies in the border area of the municipality of Kirchhundem to the city of Kreuztal in the Siegen-Wittgenstein district in the south and to the city of Olpe in the west and north.

Extension of the local area

Historically, the place consisted of two hamlets, namely Kruberg and Dutzwinkel, which have now grown together to form a village. In the map of the Heidschotter Jagd from 1743, both hamlets are still shown as independent living spaces.

Neighboring places

Neighboring towns of Kruberg are Rahrbach in the east, Burgholdinghausen in the south-east, Littfeld and Krombach in the south, Altenkleusheim in the south-west, Neuenkleusheim in the west- south- west, Stachelau in the west, Rehringhausen in the west-north-west, Fahlenscheid in the north-north-west and Oberveischede in the north.

history

The first documentary mention of Kruberg comes from 1340, when Adolf von Holdinghausen offered the Archbishop of Cologne Walram the “castrum meum Crutpracht” (= my Kruberg Castle) as an open house in exchange for a loan of 4 marks. With this he announced that he would follow the archbishop in private feuds and keep his house in Kruberg open for him. Archbishop Friedrich von Saar Werden enfeoffed Knight Adolf von Holdinghausen in 1371, among other things, with a residence in Kruberg. Günther Becker considers the castle to be a stone house that was suitable for defense. The area name "Auf der Burg" west of the Kruberg chapel could possibly indicate the location of the no longer existing facility, which is no longer known today. With Goddert von Kobbenrode, a nobleman can be found in the middle of the 15th century who was settled in Kruberg and probably lived in the von Holdinghausen castle. Sources from the period after 1500 show that the Lords of Holdinghausen lent their feudal estates received from the Archbishop of Cologne in Kruberg to farmers as so-called after-fiefs.

According to a more recent study of the place names of the district of Olpe, in addition to the first mention of "castrum [...] Crutpracht" from 1340, several other place names exist, for example: Herman van Krubeke (1348), Hove zu Krutbert (1465), Krutrop (1543 in an appraisal register), Krudorp (1628) and Kruberg (1841 in a locality table). An interpretation of the place name runs into difficulties because u. a. the original basic word (“bracht” or “beke”) cannot be determined and the meaning of “brought” is still unclear today. If you equate the preceding word element “kru” or “krut” with the Middle Low German “krut” for herb, plant or green vegetation, then, according to Flöer, the place name “Kruberg” can possibly describe a brook or a place marked with “bracht” which is characterized by vegetation.

Early clues about the size of the place can be found in an appraisal register (used to collect taxes) for the year 1543. According to this, there were 15 taxpayers in "Krutrop" (the highest taxes were due to Hundemans Hans, Bernhardt im Dutzwinkel and Mertins Johann and sein Son); this number could have coincided with the farms or houses existing at the time.

Religions

Since the middle of the 13th century Kruberg has belonged to the Catholic parish of Rahrbach. The parish is now part of the pastoral area of Kirchhundem. Due to the fact that it has belonged to the Electoral Cologne Duchy of Westphalia for centuries, the population structure of the village is still predominantly Catholic. Of the 117 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2014), 83 are Roman Catholics, 13 are Protestants and 21 are not given information on religious affiliation.

Incorporations

Since 1843/44 Kruberg belonged to the municipality of Rahrbach in the office of Bilstein. With the municipal reorganization, the village came to today's municipality of Kirchhundem on July 1, 1969.

Population development

At the time of the municipal reorganization in 1969, Kruberg had 143 inhabitants. The number of inhabitants initially fell sharply in the following years: 1974 = 130, 1978 = 105. After that, a slight increase was recorded again: 1985 = 113, 1990 = 116. As of December 31, 2014 there were 116 residents with their primary or main residence in Kruberg reported.
