The place is east of Olpe, directly on the federal highway 54 . This is where the three valleys of Altenkleusheim , Neuenkleusheim and Rehringhausen meet.

The name Stachelau can be derived as follows: Stachel (probably a family name) and Au (wide, water-rich meadow). Stachelau means, for example, Stachel's meadow .

Stachelau was first mentioned in 1383 by the pastor of Helden . The Stachelauer Hütte was of great importance for the place .
