Chrysologus Heimes

Chrysologus Heimes (born April 2, 1765 in Oberhundem ; † May 2, 1835 in Reiste ) was a German Franciscan , organist , organ expert and composer .

Chrysologus (Peter Anton) Heimes was born on April 2, 1765 as the first of five children of the married couple Adolph Heimes called Schmelter from Oberhundem and Johanna Maria Stock, who came from Silberg in the parish of Kohlhagen .

From 1781 to 1788, after joining the Franciscan order, he studied in Limburg an der Lahn , Attendorn and Mariawald and received the sacrament of ordination in Mainz in 1788 . From 1788 to 1803 he worked as a religious and organist in Wetzlar . There he published the work "Excerpt from the most common German church chants" in 1789. In 1803 Father Chrysologus Heimes came to Attendorn as a religious and teacher, where he worked until 1822. After the Franciscan monastery there was abolished by the Prussian state on July 18, 1822, he took over the pastoral position in Reiste, which he held until his death.

As an organ expert, Chrysologus Heimes u. a. expert opinions from for the organs in the parish churches in Oberhundem (1811), Kirchhundem (1814), Balve (1817), Medebach (1821), Rahrbach (1822), Bödefeld (1829), Schönholthausen (1830), Oedingen (around 1832) and Olpe (1833).

In the first months of his activity as a pastor in Reiste, Chrysologus Heimes introduced the "German church chant according to Herold". As in Wetzlar, he distinguished himself as a promoter of German church singing in Catholic worship.

Chrysologus Heimes left behind an extensive compositional work, especially organ literature, which is hardly known in today's music world. Heimes' compositions are preserved in the estate of the teacher and organist Johann Friedrich Nolte, who later worked in Reiste . The part of the Heimes estate owned by Heinrich Hülsmeyer has been on permanent loan in the Kirchhundem municipal archive since May 2007 , including the Manuale pro Organo Oberhundemensi from 1812 and Heimes' unpublished figured bass teaching.
