The village of Oedingen is a district of the municipality of Stadt Lennestadt in the Olpe district ( North Rhine-Westphalia ). With its 1036 inhabitants at the end of June 2020, it is one of the medium-sized towns in the region, with the proportion of senior citizens at 19.0% being higher than the proportion of the urban area (= 17.4%). In the year 1000 Oedingen was mentioned for the first time in a document issued by Emperor Otto III .

From 1962 to 2002 there was the Sauerland barracks as a base for the air force in the immediate vicinity of the village development .

The postal address is now 57368 Lennestadt , from 1962 to 1993 594 Lennestadt 13 or 5940 Lennestadt-Oedingen . Before that, Oedingen belonged to the postal code area 21 (Westphalia) and 21b (South Westphalia) in the system introduced in 1941. The area code of the telephone is 02725 , which the residents only have to share with the neighbors in the somewhat smaller Bracht (Schmallenberg) and Burbecke (also Lennestadt ). As a result, three-digit phone numbers are still widely used.

history

Excerpt from the overview map of the original cadastre from 1831

Evidence that points to the existence of Oedingen go back to the year 1000 (examples include: 1000 in loco Odingi, 1175: in Odinge, 1202: Teodericus de Odenege, 1210: Tidericus et filii eiusde Odincge, 1325: ecclesie in Odingen among others). The suffix “-ing” (or “-ingi”) indicates a job title that later became a place name. By referring to the Old High German “-odi” (empty, abandoned, wasteland), an interpretation for the place as “remote place” could come into consideration.

By Freigericht Oedingen, the parish community, and later the municipality Oedingen the places Oedingen were Oedingerberg , Brenschede and house Valbert closely linked in their history. The sequence of the story is therefore shown for the districts together.

Village history

  • 9/10 century: In the Carolingian-Ottonian period, the Oedingen women's monastery was located on the Oedingerberg . It was built according to the sources of the Oedinger Chronik in the ramparts of a castle complex ( Wallburg ).
  • 1144: In a property register of the Sifrid von Boyneburg a curia in Odinge (= main or upper court in Oedingen) is mentioned. This is taken as evidence that Oedingen was originally in possession of the Palatine and thus had a different history of ownership than the monastery on the Oedingerberg, whose history was linked to the Counts of Werl / Arnsberg. It was not until the year 1200 that the Count of Werl / Arnsberg came into the possession of Oedinger Höfe.
  • 1192: Emperor Heinrich VI. waives an exchange with the Paderborn Bishop Bernhard II on an estate in Oedingen in the valley.
  • 1279: Lord Dietrich Rump describes himself as Vogt of the parish church of Oedingen when exchanging wax interest (proof of the old age of the church). The ecclesiastical bailiffs represented the churches in secular affairs (e.g. in court) and ensured the armed protection of church property.
  • 1294: First mention of Varenbert, House Valbert . Evidence suggests that House Valbert was an independent aristocratic seat.
  • 1476: The last of the bailiffs "those of Oedingen" (came from the von Brochusen family with headquarters in Bruchhausen near Arnsberg) transfers all of his goods (six Oedinger courtyards) to the Grafschaft monastery.
  • 1625: Mention of a school in Oedingen - the early school system was closely linked to the church.
  • 1685: In Oedingen, according to a head treasure list (used to collect the Turkish tax ) 75 people are recorded (excluding children under 12 years of age). From the personal designations it can be seen that, in addition to the married couples, the majority of the people were servants, maidservants, horse boys and cow girls.
  • 1802/19: The end of ecclesiastical rule in 1802 in the course of secularization also led to some innovations in the local area. Under Prussian rule, Oedingen was initially assigned to the newly formed Arnsberg district in 1817 . Just two years later, Meschede became the new district town.
  • 1821: Death of the last judge, FJ. Beckers v. Oedingen. End of the Oedingen Free Court
  • 1825: The Minden-Koblenzer Heerstraße is completed from Meschede to Grevenbrück (today part of the B55 ). A barrier house (customs station) on this street was mentioned as early as 1818.
  • 1828/31: Construction of a new school building (now a parish home) by Pastor Ritter
  • 1830: Land survey, version of the original cadastre of Oedingen
  • 1960/62: Construction of the Bundeswehr barracks

On July 1, 1969, Oedingen was incorporated into the new town of Lennestadt. Here Oedingen moved from the district Meschede in the district Olpe (as of October 1, 1969 Kreis Olpe).

The historical events in Oedingen at the time of National Socialism are shown under Lennestadt # Time of National Socialism ; the statements can be viewed as applicable to all localities in the area of today's city of Lennestadt.

religion

  • May 18, 1000: Emperor Otto III. takes the monastery on the Oedingerberg, founded by Countess Gerberga zu Werl, under his special protection.
  • after 1000: The historian Wolf dates the construction of a parish church in the valley by the Count Palatine to the time shortly after the turn of the millennium. At this time, reports of the existence of a cemetery in the valley, which usually included a church, were reported. A patron saint was often named only a few years after his death or canonization; the patron saint of the Oedingen church, St. Burchardus, was canonized in 984/90. No connections can be established between the monastery on the Oedingerberg and the founding of the church in the valley.
  • 1292: The naming of the Oedingen church as a parish church is already documented in the Westphalian document book, whereas in the "liber valoris" (directory of all parish churches of the Archdiocese of Cologne around 1300) the church is only referred to as "Capella". Although the church in Oedingen was probably never officially given the title parish church, the historian Wolf assumes in the Oedinger Chronik that it was always in possession of parish rights due to the normative force of the factual.
  • 1538: lifting of the pen on the Oedingerberg after its economic decline by the Cologne archbishop Hermann of Wied
  • 1553: Mention of the St. Martin chapel in Brenschede in the directory of parishes of the Meschede deanery at that time
  • 1567: Foundation of the Vicarie St. Johannes Baptist on the Oedingerberg to maintain the service of the Church of St. Johannes Baptist
  • 1601: The Archbishop of Cologne, Ernst von Bayern, gives the vicarie to the Odacker monastery near Hirschberg.
  • 1670: On Sunday Laetare the church of St. Johannes collapses on the Oedingerberg.
  • 1716: Construction of the chapel on the Oedingerberg by the residents of the mountain
  • 1767: Establishment of a new Vicarie St. Antoni Albertis on the Oedingerberg by Canonicus Antonius Vogt, Leckmart (Vogtsche Stiftung). The services appear to have taken place in the chapel built in 1716. There is no information about the end of the vicarie.
  • 1801: Schöndelt, Obervalbert , Haus Valbert , Wiebelhausen and Nocken in Brenschede are changed to the parish of Oedingen.
  • 1821: The parish of Oedingen, which belongs to the Archdiocese of Cologne, is assigned to the Diocese of Paderborn, like all the municipalities of the Sauerland in Electoral Cologne.
  • 1832: Construction of the current parish church by Pastor Ritter (see following section "St. Burchard Oedingen")

As part of the 1000th anniversary of Oedingen, a time table was placed at the entrance to the parish church; the bronze tablets depict important events in the village's history. The chronological table was designed by Father Jahn from the Maria Königin monastery and grammar school (see also the picture gallery in the following section).

Local development

The economic environment of Oedingen was shaped by agriculture until the middle of the 19th century. A change began with the improvement of the traffic routes. Particularly noteworthy are the completion of the Minden - Koblenzer - Heeresstrasse (today Bundesstrasse 55 ) running through Oedingen in 1825 and the opening of the Ruhr-Sieg route in 1861 with a train station in Grevenbrück . In the course of this development z. For example, in 1864 the Schröder company (Schrödersche Uhren), from which the Klein & Biermann company later emerged, as well as the Schauerte company (later Stöcker) in 1867, which manufactured carbide pit lamps for mining. Apart from the local small businesses, the pebble quarry in Meggen and Halberbracht offered employment opportunities from 1850 onwards .

Despite the positive aspects mentioned, bitter poverty spread in parts of the population. Reasons included the decline of old crafts such as B. linen weaving and poor agricultural yields due to several bad harvests. The number of Oedingers who emigrated to America in the period from 1840 to around 1880 due to the lack of prospects is put at over 150.

Although the mining industry closed in 1992 and the Sauerland barracks, which only opened in 1962, were closed in 2002, the loss of jobs was offset by a large number of new businesses in the vicinity of Oedingen in the areas of metal processing and machining as well as mechanical engineering. In Oedingen itself there is an operating facility of a nationally known company for special machines and bending technology.

The club system is distinctive with 16 clubs, in addition to the traditional areas (shooting, singing, music and sports), pigeon, motor and dance sports are maintained.

The Arbeitsgemeinschaft (ARGE) Oedingen eV (emerged from the Arbeitsgemeinschaft 1000 Jahre Oedingen eV) and the Wander- und Karnevalsverein Oedingen eV are responsible for realizing local issues and researching local history as part of a local development plan. Completed measures from more recent times are the redesign of the town center (green quiet areas, playgrounds and notice boards, etc.) as well as the design of a "historic hiking trail". The trail runs for 9 kilometers and includes 15 stops with explanatory and documentation boards. Important "stations" include the Lintloe fountain (see article Valbert House ), the time fountain at the Catholic. Church of St. Burchard as well as the church building, the chapel of St. Johannes am Oedingerberg , the place of worship Madonna der Straße (formerly: Heiligenhäuschen in Brömmeken) and the “Fabris Wiese” project. "Fabris Wiese" is an amusement park created under the motto "Playable Landscape" with meadow, natural stream, pond, tree house, campfire site, fountain and cable car, etc.

St. Burchard Church Oedingen

→ see also main article: St. Burchard (Oedingen)

The current church was built in 1832 under the then pastor Ritter, after the previous church had to be demolished due to dilapidation. The new church was built as a stately late classical hall church with a well-structured seven-axis extension, large arched windows and archivolts as well as two rows of Doric columns on which the ceiling beams rest. The architectural style reveals an architect who is at the height of his time. The building materials were procured from the demolished church of the Grafschaft monastery.

Only two other Catholic churches in Westphalia have been built according to a similar pattern. The Romanesque tower of the old church from the 11th century has been preserved. The organ with 16 registers from 1894 was built by the organ building company Stockmann from Werl and inaugurated on January 20, 1895. In the rear part of the church next to the entrance hangs a copy of a Gothic statue from 1520 of St. James the Elder. Ä. by the artist Petrus Kolshusen . The original is in the Diocesan Museum Paderborn.

The extensive renovation of the church in 2016-2017 mainly comprised the following areas: repainting of the church interior, revision of the pews, renewal of the heating system, redesign of the choir and chancel, renovation of the organ, renewal of the electrical system, checking and repair of the bells and renewal of the stairs to the church. The costs of the entire measure are estimated at approx. Estimated 560,000 euros.

Municipal reorganization

The settlement areas or farmsteads Brenschede, Oedingermühle, Haus Valbert, Obervalbert and Oedingerberg belong to the municipality of Oedingen. Until the municipal reorganization of the Sauerland and Paderborn regions in 1969, Oedingen was part of the Serkenrode office in the Meschede district and also included Schwartmecke , Glamke, Leckmart , Schöndelt , Permecke, Elsmecke and Wiebelhausen .

The founding of the city of Lennestadt in 1969 meant that the official routes and routes to school changed - often with relief, since the communities were redesigned according to valleys. Since then, students no longer attend the secondary school in Eslohe , but the one in Grevenbrück , instead of the grammar school in Schmallenberg , one of the schools in Altenhundem is chosen, where the town hall is also located. At the same time a certain independence was abandoned, which led to the just newly built secondary school to primary school was demoted and thus the visit to a secondary school, formerly by the elementary school ensures was no longer possible at the site.
