Obermelbecke is a district of the city of Lennestadt in the Olpe district in North Rhine-Westphalia .

location

The district of Obermelbecke is located in the northern area of the city of Lennestadt, northeast of Melbecke in the immediate vicinity of the municipality of Finnentrop . The Melbecke , a right tributary of the Elspebach, flows through the village . To the east lies the 508 m high Hemberg.

history

According to a more recent investigation of the place names of the district of Olpe, indications of the existence of the place go back to the 14th century, for example: Ouren Melbyke (1369), Overn Melbeke (1454) and Christian von Overn Melmicke (in the appraisal register from 1543) . With regard to the interpretation of the place name, the result explained for the place Melbecke applies as a “sandy brook” or “dark brook”. The preceding syllable "Ober-" only indicates the location above Melbecke. An appraisal register from 1543, which was used to collect taxes, gives clues for the size of the place at that time. A total of 10 taxpayers are named for the town of Melmicke (Melbecke and Obermelbecke combined); this number should have agreed with the farms and houses that existed at the time. Two of the taxpayers are to be assigned to the town of Obermelbecke (Henrich zu Overn Melmicke and Christian von Overn Melmicke).

At the end of June 2008 Obermelbecke had 12 residents, they have not been assigned separately in recent years for organizational reasons. The small place is agriculturally oriented and is located in a hilly area.
