Langenei is a district of Lennestadt in the Olpe district in North Rhine-Westphalia . The place is right on the B 236 in the section that leads from Altenhundem to Schmallenberg .

history

Club tree in the park

The place is mentioned in a document as early as 1344 as the designation of origin of the then Schmallenberg official Richard von Langenoge. This official came from Langenei and moved to the not far away town of Schmallenberg. In terms of linguistic history, Langenoge (later Langenei) can be interpreted as a term for “long floodplain”, which would also fit geographically to the shape of the valley from the neighboring Kickenbach to Langenei.

Clues about the population of Langenei can be derived for the first time from an appraisal register (used to collect taxes) for the year 1543. It shows 9 people liable to treasure for Langenei. If one equates the number of those liable for the treasure with the number of families or houses existing at that time and calculates 6 residents per house, then around 1550 around 50 to 60 people should have lived in Langenei.

At the end of June 2020, the number of inhabitants was 726, with the proportion of 25.6% of those over 65 years of age being comparatively large (Lennestadt urban area: 17.4%). The place is rural with well-preserved or restored half-timbered houses and some restaurants with overnight accommodations for holidaymakers. The club life is very pronounced. This can also be seen in the club tree recently set up in Langeneier Park, on which 16 clubs have attached their club logo.

A special feature is the Jewish cemetery , which was laid out before 1920 and which was renovated and redesigned in 1994.

religion

St. John Baptist

The vast majority of the residents of Langenei are Roman Catholic . When the first church was built cannot be determined. The house name "biem Kirchoffe", which appeared in the first half of the 17th century, suggests that there was already a chapel at this time. As part of a chapel expansion in 1932, today's parish church of St. Johannes Baptist was given its current shape. Extensive renovations took place in 1973 and 1994/1996. Today the church presents itself as a single-nave hall building made of rubble stones. To the west it is closed off by a small octagonal tower with a baroque dome. In response to the renovations newly created altar was established in early 1996 by the Paderborn auxiliary bishop consecrated . Langenei is one of the few parishes that have built a bell tower outside the church. In the tower, which can be seen from afar, there are 4 bells with the dedications Christ - King, John the Baptist, Mary - Queen and Hubertus - Bell. The parish of St. Johannes Baptist Langenei is part of the Lennetal pastoral network , which also includes the neighboring parishes of St. Agatha Altenhundem and St. Judokus Saalhausen.
