Sporke is a village that belongs to the municipality of Lennestadt in the Sauerland .
geography
Nestled between Melbecke and Frettertal , the place is on a central terrace sloping to the southwest, surrounded by fields and meadows on the limestone depressions of the Attendorn-Elsper double hollow . The view extends from the ridge of the Ebbegebirge (Nordhelle near Attendorn) to the ridge of the Rothaargebirge.
history
Sporkey is first mentioned in 1281 in a property register in the parish of Elspe . Another early reference to Sporke's existence is in an agreement from 1393 for a property sale. Accordingly, Wilhelm Pepersack and Hiedenrik van Heygen sold to Henneke Schade von Grevenstein their property in the estate at Sporke, which Johan van Ostendorp ( Ostentrop ) has as a fief of them.
The treasury register from 1543 shows nine persons liable for treasury for Sporkey . If one equates the number of those liable for the treasury with the number of existing families or houses and calculates six residents per house, around 1540 about 50 to 60 people should have lived in Sporkey . Presumably, Sporke is to be equated with the term “dry”, meaning that Sporke means a dry place. This corresponds to the fact that the Sporkers have founded their own water association. After drilling a deep hole in 1983 and building an elevated tank, the place is now supplied with water.
The still rural place with well-preserved or restored half-timbered houses currently has 192 inhabitants (as of June 30, 2018). There are currently two main farms and two part-time businesses. The place has barely expanded over decades, but a development area for around eleven families is in the planning stage.
Chapel of St. Sebastian and Margaretha
The largest chapel in the parish of Elspe is located in Sporke , its current appearance dates from 1925. The chapel patrons are St. Sebastian and St. Margaretha .
A previous building can be proven since the 16th century, although the date of foundation is not known. In 1596 it was reported that the chapel had no property of its own and had to be maintained by the villagers. After a theft, the chapel bell had to be replaced by a new one in 1759; it is still there today and is engraved with the year “1759”. A complete renovation of the chapel had to be made in 1790, the new building was the pastor Elsper Arenz in February 1791 consecrated .
Since this building was no longer considered worthy, even after a further renovation in 1825, the village population built a new chapel with a great deal of personal effort in 1924/25, which was equipped with heating and an organ.
The great war damage from 1945 could be repaired with considerable efforts of the village population. Comprehensive repairs were finally carried out in 1982. The jewel in the chapel is the baroque high altar . Sporke belongs to the Catholic parish of St. Jakobus d. Ä. Elspe, which belongs to the Oenetal pastoral network .
