Gleierbrück is a district of Lennestadt in the Olpe district in North Rhine-Westphalia . The place is right on the B 236 in the section that leads from Altenhundem to Schmallenberg . Immediately adjacent are the places Langenei and the climatic health resort Saalhausen .

A field bridge near the town marks the point at which the historic Kriegerweg trunk road led from Siegen over the Lenne to Paderborn .

Location structure

The area around the village is shaped by the Lenne valley, the Gleierbach tributary flowing into the Lenne and the Rothaargebirge mountain ranges surrounding the Lenne valley.

The local area offers favorable conditions for fish, especially trout farming . The oldest farm has existed for over 100 years and currently manages 28 fish ponds. In addition to ready-to-cook fish and smoked products, saplings (in addition to trout, pikeperch, carp, tench, sturgeon, eel, etc.) are sold far beyond the Olpe district. The angler park Sauerländer Anglerglück , which includes 7 ponds with different stocks , serves more for leisure activities .

In the rural town with half-timbered houses there are two larger hotel guesthouses with leisure and hiking opportunities, while the tourist events of the neighboring climatic health resort Saalhausen can be used. The Lenneroute and SauerlandRadRing cycle paths lead through Gleierbrück .

The place does not have its own chapel or church. In 1998, however, the villagers built a bell tower that sounds at certain times of the day and on special occasions.

Gleierbrück had 163 residents at the end of June 2020. The proportion of 20.9% senior citizens is relatively high (average urban area: 17.4%).

Renaming of controversial street names

The controversial "Josefa-Berens-Straße" in Gleierbrück will be renamed to "Alter Weg" on January 1st, 2015
Memorial stone to Josefa Berens in Gleierbrück. The heavily weathered inscription includes the note “The narrator of the Sauerland lived and worked in Gleierbrück from 1925 to 1968. Your peasant novels are great epic poetry. 1936 Westphalian Literature Prize "

From 1925 to 1969, the storyteller Josefa Berens-Totenohl, who is known in the Sauerland, lived and worked in Gleierbrück . With the prize money of the Westphalian Literature Prize awarded to her in 1935 , she built the “Femhof” residential building with its steep gable above the Gleiertal (named after her 1934 novel “Der Femhof”). The building is a historical monument. Because of their closeness to the National Socialist ideology, their person and works are judged very critically; For details, please refer to the individual contribution on Josefa Berens-Totenohl. The City Council of Lennestadt decided on February 26, 2014 to rename all street names in Gleierbrück that are reminiscent of Josefa-Berens-Totenohl and their works (Josefa-Berens-Straße, Femhofstraße, and Frau-Magdlene-Straße). The council instructed the mayor to work out proposals for a new name together with the residents of the affected streets. The mayor pointed out that the basis for making decisions about the person of the writer had changed significantly in recent decades. Accordingly, the citizens' meeting decided in March 2014 to rename the three controversial streets reminiscent of Josefa-Berens to "Alter Weg", "Sonnenweg" and "Zum Eulensiepen" Whether the memorial stone to Josefa Berens-Totenohl can also be removed is questionable because it stands on private property.
