The Sauerland barracks was from 1962 to 2002 base for the German Luftwaffe in the southern Sauerland near Lennestadt- Oedingen and Headquartered FlaRak units.

The decision to build barracks in Oedingen was made in 1959. Construction of the barracks began in 1960. The barracks were completed and moved into in 1962. The 1st battery of the anti-aircraft missile battalion 22, military short: 1./FlaRakBtl 22, was removed from the in August 1962 Wahn air force barracks relocated to Oedingen. The barracks area of ​​the base was named Sauerland barracks in 1967 . From 1962 to 1987 US soldiers of the 52nd US Army Artillery Detachment (USAAD) were also housed in the barracks.

The deployed weapon system consisted of anti-aircraft missiles , also known as surface-to-air missiles, of the Nike Ajax and Nike Hercules type . These systems had the task of locating, identifying and combating enemy flight targets at medium and high altitudes. The NIKE-Hercules weapon system could be equipped with nuclear equipment and could carry its warhead in ground-to-ground use up to 180 km. The control of these nuclear warheads had the US Army . This era ended with the withdrawal of US soldiers in 1987.

The barracks had been designed and built for the special weapon system; the base was part of NATO's air defense . Up to 500 German and at times also US soldiers were stationed there.

The barracks consisted of three parts, the accommodation, the missile position and the fire control position.

Later, in particular, the missile position and the fire control position were modified and the PATRIOT weapon system was stationed.

After the barracks were closed in 2002, the barracks area became the Sauerlandkaserne industrial area . After 2002 the barracks were demolished. In 2012 only the former building of the guard was left. The company Josef Schmelter and Linn Gerätebau are located in today's industrial area.
