Schöndelt is a district of Finnentrop in the Olpe district in North Rhine-Westphalia with around 90 inhabitants. It lies roughly in the middle of the section of the state road 737 leading from Oedingen to Fretter . The area around the typical Sauerland village is mountainous and wooded.

history

There is no exact evidence of Schöndelt's age; it is estimated by the Heimatverein to be “over 800 years”. Schöndelt was closely connected with the parish of Schönholthausen and was also owned by Herford Abbey . A list of goods from Herford Abbey from the end of the 14th century names a total of six farms in Schöndelt and nearby Husen ( Wiebelhausen ): four in Schöndelt, two in Wiebelhausen, namely Schonholte , Schonholte-Kotborenn , Schonholte (differently called: Koipmanns ), Schonholte-Weuel , Ton-Husenn , and Ton-Husenn-Weuel . An appraisal register (used to collect taxes) for the year 1543 shows seven taxpayers for Schonhoult (Schöndelt), some of which are similar names to those in the aforementioned list of goods. Assuming that every taxpayer had a family of six, around 40 to 50 people are likely to have lived in Schöndelt in the 14th to 16th centuries.

church

Chapel of St. George

Since when a chapel or church has existed in Schöndelt cannot be assessed due to a lack of clear evidence. A chapel dedicated to St. George was located in the middle of the village and had to be demolished in 1914 because it was in disrepair. The St. George Church, which characterizes the town today, was built on the same spot and was consecrated on December 14, 1915. The parish of St. Georg belongs together with four other parishes in Fretter (St. Matthias), Serkenrode (St. Johannes Baptist), Schliprüthen (St. Georg) and Ostentrop (St. Lucia) to the pastoral association of Frettertal. Together with St. Matthias Fretter, the parish of St. Georg Schöndelt maintains a joint parish council for pastoral tasks, but an independent asset management with a church board. Important tasks of the church council are the administration of the church's own land and the cemetery. In addition, extensive damage to the interior of the church after a fire was repaired in 2012.

Others

Popular events of the village community are the annual children's shooting festivals and the village festivals in connection with competitions for men and women in the tug of war; Since 2011 there has also been an annual “beer athlon” (carrying beer crate) competition.
