Hülschotten is a place in the municipality of Finnentrop near the city limits of Plettenberg and the border of the Märkisches Kreis . The place is about four kilometers west of Finnentrop on the county road 5. Hülschotten is on the north-western border of the Olpe district .

history

The place Hülschotten is mentioned in writing for the first time in a document from the parish archive of Attendorn from September 1, 1370. In terms of content, it is reported that a Juotte van Hulschoiten was donated to the Beguinage in Attendorn, which was occupied from 1317 onwards . Other spellings of the place name were among others Hulßkotten , Hulscotten and (until 1831) Hülskotten . Its origin or importance is explained by the striking occurrence of holly (lat. Ilex), which in earlier times grew increasingly on the slopes of the Ebbesattel north wing. The first part of the name is derived from ahd. Hulis , huls for (piercing) sleeve and refers to the aforementioned shrub; the second part stands for Kotten , a common name for a small farm away from the village community. In 1536, a total of five taxable farmers were registered in Hülschotten in the treasury register.

Prehistory and early history

The first traces of human presence reach as far back as the Neolithic , as is shown by the finds of processed greywacke made in 1936 in Hülsey near Hülschotten. However, it cannot be assumed that the area was settled before the (late) Middle Ages.

In 1628 a first chapel was built in the village. The so-called Servatius Chapel was destroyed in a storm in 1856 and rebuilt in connection with a schoolhouse. During a church service, the door to the classroom could be opened to expand the choir. The inauguration took place in 1859. The residents of Hülschotten decided to build a new chapel in 1922. Therefore, on February 11, 1923, the Hülschotten Chapel Association was founded. The foundation stone of today's Marien Chapel was laid in 1923, and the chapel was inaugurated four years later. This was extensively renovated at the turn of the millennium. Nowadays, holy masses or evening praise are celebrated there every Monday.

Association

Village life in Hülschotten is clearly shaped by the four local associations. Every year at Whitsun, the Heimat Schützenverein Hülschotten eV celebrates the traditional shooting festival. During the carnival time on 11.11. and on the high days around Shrove Monday, the Carnival Friends Hülschotten von 1980 eV organize the local carnival. Furthermore, the Kapellenverein Hülschotten eV takes care of the maintenance of the Marien-Kapelle and the sports club "Blau-Weiß" Hülschotten eV takes care of the maintenance of the soccer field above the shooting hall and organizes various sports courses.
