A Silverlink Metro train , forerunner to the London Overground from 1997 to 2007

The Watford High Street train station is a station at the Watford DC Line in Watford , Hertfordshire , United Kingdom near London . It is served by the London Overground .

history

The Watford and Rickmansworth Railway (W & RR) opened the station on 1 October 1862. trains ran from the nearby train station Watford Junction to Rickmansworth to its train station Rickmansworth (Church Street ). In 1881 she came under the control of the London and North Western Railway (LNWR).

In 1912 a branch line to Croxley Green went into operation. In 1917 the Underground Electric Railways Company of London extended its Bakerloo Line to Watford Junction via the Watford DC Line, built in partnership with the LNWR . In 1921 the LNWR was assigned to the London, Midland and Scottish Railway (LMS) according to the Railways Act 1921 . In 1922, the LNWR completed its Camden – Watford Junction route, which connected Watford Junction to London Euston via the Watford DC Line .

After the nationalization in 1948, the Watford DC Line was operated by British Rail , from 1986 under the Network Southeast brand . In the 1950s Watford High Street was served by British Rail with trains on both branches to Croxley Green and Rickmansworth (Church Street) , as well as to Euston and Broad Street via Primrose Hill Station, and also by the Bakerloo Line.

Most of the connections were discontinued over the following years:

In the end, only British Rail trains went to Euston via the Watford DC Line. After the privatization of British Rail, the National Express Group took over the operation, which operated trains under the Silverlink Metro brand . Transport for London has been running its London Overground trains here since 2007 . The second power rail (600 VDC) is currently out of order as London Overground only uses the first power rail with 750 VDC .

service

The London Overground currently serves the station with trains to Euston and Watford Junction . Bus routes W1, W7, W9, W19, W20, 2, 8, 602, 142 and 258 also stop at the station, and other buses run from the nearby Watford Town Center bus station .

future

Metropolitan Line

Map of the Croxley Rail Link

The Croxley Rail Link will consist of a reactivated section of the Watford and Rickmansworth Railway and a connection by means of a viaduct from the Metropolitan Line to said section. The Metropolitan Line is then to turn on the link before its previous endpoint Watford Met and run across the city to Watford High Street and over the tracks of the Watford DC Line to Watford Junction. While preparatory construction work was already taking place, cost increases meant that financing is no longer guaranteed. The project has been suspended since 2017.

Bakerloo Line

According to the “London Plan” urban development project, the Bakerloo Line is to replace the London Overground and run back to Watford Junction, as it was running until 1982. The Watford DC Line from Euston to Watford Junction, which is currently served in full by the Overground and partly by the Bakerloo Line, will then be served exclusively by the Bakerloo Line.
