Ludwig Schmitz-Kallenberg

Ludwig Alfons Hubert Schmitz-Kallenberg (born June 10, 1867 in Rheydt , Rhine Province ; † April 22, 1937 in Münster , Province of Westphalia ) was a German historian , professor at the Westphalian Wilhelms University and director of the Münster State Archives for the Prussian government districts of Arnsberg , Minden and Münster .

Life

Schmitz called himself Schmitz-Kallenberg after his marriage to Maria Kallenberg in 1903. He was the son of the married couple Dr. med. Ludwig Schmitz and Alwine, nee Roosen, and after attending the humanistic high school in Mönchengladbach studied history and philosophy at the universities of Freiburg and Münster (1887-1889) and in Leipzig , where he on November 27, 1891 with a thesis on Konrad von Soltau as Dr. phil. received his doctorate. In 1893 he went to Rome on a scholarship from the Görres Society . In 1896 he became a member of the Historical Commission for Westphalia , on March 24, 1899 its full member, on March 29, 1912 its committee member, on May 29, 1929 its secretary, on July 28, 1928 its deputy chairman and with the end of the latter in the year 1934 honorary member.

In 1899 he began teaching as a private lecturer at the Royal Theological and Philosophical Academy in Münster, after completing his habilitation there in the same year . In 1906 he was given the title of professor . From 1907 to 1918 he was a full professor at the Wilhelms University of Münster, which was (re) established in 1902 . In 1918 he became a full honorary professor for history and historical auxiliary sciences at the university.

In 1921, the Free State of Prussia appointed him director of the Münster State Archives (today the North Rhine-Westphalia State Archives, Westphalia Department ). In addition, from 1924 to 1928 he held the position of director of the Association for History and Antiquity of Westphalia (Münster department) . He retired in 1932. In 1962 his estate came to the Münster University Archives .
