Aloys master
Aloys Meister (born December 7, 1866 in Frankfurt am Main , † January 27, 1925 in Münster ) was a German historian .
Aloys Meister was the son of a senior postal worker and came from a strictly Catholic family. Meister passed the higher school leaving examination in 1885 and studied theology in Münster from 1885 . In 1886 he went to Strasbourg and turned to the study of history. Meister was particularly influenced by Paul Scheffer-Boichorst . In 1890 he received his doctorate with the thesis The Hohenstaufen im Alsace, 1079–1255. In 1890 he received an assistant position at the Historical Institute of the Görres Society in Rome . His main research interests in Rome were the history of the Strasbourg chapter dispute , the history of the papal nunciatures and Italian cryptography . In 1894 he completed his habilitation with a thesis on the schism in the Strasbourg Cathedral Chapter 1583–1592. In the same year he became a private lecturer in Bonn . During his time in Bonn he mainly dealt with Rhenish topics. In 1899 he succeeded Heinrich Finke as an associate professor for middle and modern history in Münster. In 1903 he became a personal professor there. In 1907 he published a presentation of German constitutional history from the beginnings to the 15th century . In 1908 he became a full professor in Münster. In 1910/11 he held the office of dean and in 1911/12 he was rector. In 1918 he became a secret councilor .
Master became important as a scientific organizer. He tried to alleviate the lack of scientific handbooks with a plan of historical science (1906). Meister was able to win numerous well-known scientists for collaboration. When Meister became editor of the 6th edition of the classic textbook of German history, the " Gebhardt ", in 1922 , he made profound changes. The history of the German federal states as well as new issues relating to social and party history were given greater consideration. In the interest of the high scientific standard, Meister also employed more university teachers than before for Gebhardt. His main research interests were state, territorial and local history. His account of the Strasbourg chapter dispute (1899) became fundamental. In 1900 he was elected a full member of the Historical Commission for Westphalia , and from 1914 until his death he was its first chairman. Parts of his personal and academic estate are kept in the university archive of the Westphalian Wilhelms University in Münster , of which he was the first director.
