Strasbourg chapter dispute
The Strasbourg chapter dispute was a dispute between the Catholic and Protestant parties in the cathedral chapter of the Strasbourg cathedral for supremacy in the diocese of Strasbourg . It began in 1583 and finally ended in 1604 with a victory for the Catholic party over the controversial occupation of the episcopate since 1592 .
The chapter dispute escalated after the death of Bishop Johann IV von Manderscheid-Blankenheim , when the Protestant party elected fifteen-year-old Johann Georg von Brandenburg as the new bishop, while the Catholic majority in the chapter voted for Karl von Lorraine shortly afterwards . The armed conflict that ensued between the two parties was limited by an armistice in 1593, which left Karl in the left-hand part of the Rhine and Johann Georg in the right-hand part of the diocese to rule. Emperor Rudolf II ended the split in the diocese in 1599 with a vote in favor of Karl; Johann Georg waived his rights in 1604 in return for financial compensation.
