Wilhelm Kohl (historian)

Wilhelm Kohl (born December 9, 1913 in Magdeburg , † October 2, 2014 in Münster ) was a German historian and archivist .

Life

Wilhelm Kohl was born the son of a judge at the Magdeburg Regional Court . He attended Otto-Guericke-Oberrealschule in his hometown, where he graduated from high school in 1933. He studied Romance languages, English, German and history at the University of Halle and at the University of Göttingen .

After eight semesters, he put 1937 the state examination and was in the same year in Göttingen with the work The administration of the eastern department of the Kingdom of Westphalia from 1807 to 1814 PhD . He then went to the Institute for Archival Studies and Historical Studies in Berlin-Dahlem, where he took the exam as a participant in the 6th course; in 1939 it went to the State Archives in Münster . In 1940 he was drafted into the Wehrmacht, and in 1941 he was temporarily seconded to Münster in order to organize the relocation of the archives of the State Archives to mines and other places that were probably not affected by the bombing. In 1942 he married Anna-Luise Preußker (* 1922). As a soldier on the Eastern Front , he was taken prisoner by the Soviets in 1944. He was released in 1949 and resumed his work at the State Archives in Münster. In addition, he had worked at the Max Planck Institute for History in Göttingen from 1957 . From 1966 he was a lecturer at the Pedagogical University of Westphalia-Lippe , from which he was appointed honorary professor in 1969 . After it was integrated into the Westphalian Wilhelms University , he continued his teaching position there until the end of the winter semester 1982/83.

In 1970 he became head of the State Archives in Münster; In 1978 he retired. From 1978 to 2004 he headed the university archive of the Westphalian Wilhelms University in Münster .

From 1970 to 1986 Kohl was the first chairman of the Historical Commission for Westphalia , of which he had been a full member since 1955; In 1989 he was elected an honorary member (with the personal designation honorary chairman). Kohl was also a member of the Prussian Historical Commission (since 1975) and the Historical Commission for Lower Saxony and Bremen (since 1976) and a corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences in Göttingen (since 1988).

The main focus of Kohl's work was the history of Westphalia , in particular the church history of the diocese of Münster . He is known nationwide as the author of numerous publications on the Westphalian region of the Germania Sacra and as the editor of important standard works on Westphalian history.

Wilhelm Kohl was Protestant . He died at the age of 100.
