Life

Wilhelm Erben, who descended from Bohemian and partly Huguenot ancestors, attended the grammar school in his hometown Salzburg from 1874 to 1882 . From 1885 to 1887 he took part in the 16th course at the Institute for Austrian Historical Research in Vienna . He then became a close colleague of Theodor von Sickels at the institute for the edition of Otto III's documents .

In 1891, Erben became a curator at the Imperial and Royal Heeresmuseum (today: Heeresgeschichtliches Museum ) in Vienna. After his habilitation in 1901, Erben was initially a private lecturer in Vienna until he was appointed professor for medieval history and historical auxiliary sciences in Innsbruck in 1903 ; from 1917 until his death in 1933 he was finally professor at the Karl-Franzens-Universität Graz . From 1920 Erben was a member of the State Historical Commission for Styria . From 1926 to 1928 he was chairman of the Association of Historians .

Erben's main research areas were historical auxiliary sciences, the history of the war and the history of Salzburg. His manual on the imperial and royal documents of the Middle Ages in Germany, France and Italy (see: Works ) is important to this day.

Wilhelm-Erben-Gasse , newly built in Vienna-Inzersdorf in 1959, is named after Erben . In Salzburg he gave its name to Wilhelm-Erben-Strasse .
