Othmar Pickl

Othmar Pickl (born September 11, 1927 in Baden near Vienna , † August 28, 2008 in Graz ) was an Austrian historian .

Life

Pickl studied German and History at the University of Graz and was awarded a Dr. phil. PhD . In 1969 he received a call to the newly created chair for economic and social history at the Karl-Franzens University in Graz. In 1995 he retired .

He was a corresponding member of the Austrian Academy of Sciences and Socio straniero of the Deputazione di Storia Patria per la Venezia Giulia in Trieste. He was elected to the Historical Commission for Styria in 1956 and was its executive secretary on an honorary basis from 1957 to 2006.

Act

Othmar Pickl published over 300 scientific papers. He was particularly involved in coming to terms with the regional history of Styria: Under his leadership, the ten-volume series “History of Styria” began to be published; this is the first comprehensive account of the development of Styrian history since 1934.

In addition to being named “Hofrat”, he was awarded the star in 2007 with the Great Gold Medal of Honor of the State of Styria . He was a member of the Graz Commandery of the Order of the Knights of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem .
