Franz Martin (born September 22, 1882 in Salzburg ; † December 5, 1950 ibid) was an Austrian art and regional historian.

life and work

Franz Martin was born in Salzburg as the son of an upholsterer. From 1901 he studied at the University of Vienna . In 1903 he became a full member of the Institute for Austrian Historical Research . From 1920 he was a member of the State Historical Commission for Styria . Franz Martin was head of the Salzburg State Archives from 1924 to 1950. From 1921 to 1938 and from 1945 he was a board member of the Society for Salzburg Regional Studies . He was the author of numerous books and articles. In 1937 he was appointed State Archivist General, and in the same year he was given the honor of corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences in Vienna.

Franz Martin was married and had four children. He died on December 5, 1950 in his apartment, Nonnberggasse 3, in the former court judge house of the Nonnberg monastery .

The tireless researcher of Salzburg's regional history was buried in the St. Peter cemetery , in the middle of that world of old Salzburg, which was considered to be his creative life.

collection

Up until 2006, his apartment in Salzburg also housed Martin's impressive collection of art and antiques, which from 1944 to 1995 was protected by the Republic of Austria. This collection contained pictures and antiques by renowned artists such as Johann Fischbach , Hubert Sattler , Johann Michael Rottmayr , Georg Pezolt and others.
