Hubert Sattler (born January 27, 1817 in Vienna; † April 3, 1904 there ) was an Austrian landscape painter of the 19th century .

Life

Hubert Sattler did not mainly work for the regular art market, but showed his detailed views of exotic places as a showman in an illusionistic form of representation based on the panorama , which was then called Kosmorama . The large-format images were illuminated like a peep-box and presented to the viewer in darkened rooms using an eye slit.

Sattler exhibited his paintings in many European countries and also overseas. He bequeathed many pictures to the city of Salzburg that he painted on his long travels from the Middle East to Latin America . They are exhibited in alternating order in the Salzburg Panorama Museum, a separate museum within the Salzburg Museum , provided that no special exhibition takes up their space.

Hubert Sattler's father Johann Michael Sattler (1786–1847) is the creator of the “ Sattler Panorama ”, a topographically valuable circular painting of the city of Salzburg. Hubert Sattler donated the 26 m long and 5 m high extremely detailed circular painting to the city of Salzburg. Hubert Sattler's son Hubert S. the Younger became an ophthalmologist and professor at various universities.

The city of Salzburg honored Hubert Sattler by naming a street in the new town. The Hubert-Sattler-Gasse leads from Mirabell Square or the Rainerstraße to Franz-Josef-Straße.
